Ever since I discovered iTalkWhoa last month, I took some time to get used to its features such as emails, SMS and recently, calls! I would say one of the strong selling points for iTalkWhoa would be its cheap International Direct Dial (IDD) call rates. Check out the rates to most international countries:

Mother’s Day Special

Mother’s Day is coming soon! Have you planned or bought anything for your mom yet? This year would be the first year that I won’t be celebrating Mother’s Day with my mom since I’ll be celebrating it with my mom-in-law. To make up for it, I decided to get my mom a gift that she always wanted (not that I didn’t buy her presents before, I did! ). I got her a hair dryer! She always complained that her current hair dryer was too slow in drying and the air flow was just pathetic. And I have to agree with her! Every time I go back home and use her hair dryer, it’d take me forever to dry my long hair.

So, I went to Jusco to scout for the perfect hair dryer for her and found this! A Panasonic Ion Hair Dryer!

It’s an Ion hair dryer, which supposedly dries and conditions hair at the same time. It is also extremely low noise, but high power. When the salesgirl tried it for me, I thought it sounded pretty quiet and assumed the air flow to be weak, but no, it was pretty strong and hot.

My brand new Iphone 3GS from Digi

“Always the smarter choice” – the ever popular tagline from DiGi. I have seen their ads all around in TV, newspapers, highways and shopping malls but I never thought of switching to DiGi at all, since I was a loyal Maxis subscriber. Come to think of it, I have been loyal to Maxis for a good 10 years! That’s right! Ever since my first year in Uni! But alas, the temptation was too great when DiGi finally announced their plan for Iphone. I actually pre-registered for it, since there was no obligation to buy anyway, just to be one of the first to know the plans.

When the date came for me to collect my Iphone (1st of April 2010), I made sure it was no April’s Fool joke! *LOL* I went to 1 Utama with Saucer, and saw the huge booth set up in the Oval Concourse area, donned in none other than bright yellow colour! After going through the registration and payment process, I finally got my hands on the yellow bag! Love their campaign here: iWant – iGet – iGot!

Being a pre-registered customer also has the perks! We were given a very nice FREE gift! A Case-Mate ‘barely there’ Iphone casing and screen protector! *woot* I was so happy! This was definitely the perfect gift! Why? Ask any Iphone users and they’d tell you that the first thing to get after buying the Iphone is the protector. The Iphone seems fragile and has such an awesome huge screen that we just can’t resist from protecting them.

Lately, more and more social networking sites are mushrooming such that many people need to log in to multiple websites everyday just to keep in touch with the world. I, for example, have 3 email accounts from Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail respectively, not to mention Facebook, Twitter and MSN! Therefore, every day I need to log in to all the websites separately and boy, it really is a chore. What would you say to a one-stop portal that could integrate all these sites into just ONE single page? Isn’t that a dream come true?

This is when TM’s iTalk Whoa! came to the rescue.

ITalk Whoa is a Unified Messaging and Convergence platform providing single-point-access to Messaging & Collaboration systems. iTalk Whoa provides an interface that enables users to synchronize all the email accounts as well as social networking sites to enable them to connect, communicate and collaborate with their families and friends.

I just found about iTalk Whoa recently and I immediately registered myself at the website. The appearance looks pretty much like a Microsoft Outlook interface, except that there are so much more functions on the sidebar.

Sanyo Xacti launching dinner at Chinois & full HD video

After the Sanyo Xacti press conference, the group of us bloggers had about 2 hours of free time to kill while waiting for dinner. Being at the newly opened Resorts World, of course we couldn’t help from doing some sightseeing and possibly some shopping! Our first stop was at Hard Rock Hotel Singapore!

Then we proceeded to the casino. The place was really crowded and warm. I suppose I’ve always associated casino with Genting that being in a warm environment just didn’t seem right. But the architecture here is so much grander, and there’s constant music playing in the background. Very similar to being in Disneyland! *LOL* Except that there are not Disney characters.

We also managed to catch a salsa performance just nearby the chocolate store. Very talented dancers! But again, the weather was a little warm so it was not a very comfortable experience watching the show while sweating.

My Sanyo Xacti Experience at Resorts World, Singapore

Have you ever heard of Sanyo branded cameras? No? Neither have I! The Sanyo Xacti series claims to be the world’s smallest, lightest and thinnest dual cameras and I can safely affirm to that. With the release of Sanyo Xacti series of cameras, amateur video enthusiasts will now be closer to realising their dreams of producing their own quality movies with the effects of professional film-making like wide-angle shots, close-ups, brilliant clarity colour, fast-speed action shots – all captured in full-HD glory.

So what say you? Believe it or not? Follow my journey of discovery and you shall know. The group of us bloggers started our journey from LCCT airport and flew all the way to Singapore to meet up with the Sanyo counterparts there.

I finally won my first Lucky draw

Yesterday, a prominent EDA (Electronic Design Automation) company came to conduct a one-day symposium at my company’s auditorium. There were some visitors invited from other companies as well, to make up the numbers. Unfortunately, there were only about 30 over attendees at the end, couldn’t even fill up half of the auditorium. But it’s good news for those who attended though, because there was going to be a lucky draw at the end of the symposium! The less the number of attendees, the higher the chances are to win! *selfish* LOL.

Anyway, the first prize was an Ipod Touch, second was a Buffalo brand 500GB external hard disk a.k.a. MiniStation, and 3 consolation prizes of an Ipod Shuffle each. Towards the end of the event, the lucky draw began and I was actually thinking, “How nice it would be to have the hard disk drive”, because the other day Saucer was just mentioning that we’re running out of hard disk space.

Lo and behold, after drawing the 3 consolation prizes, it was time for the second prize, and guess what? My name was announced! I couldn’t believe it! I screamed for a while and eagerly went down the steps of the auditorium towards the stage. And what could be worse than almost tripping on my way down! I blame it on the stupid microphone stand which was standing in the middle of the stairs. I tried avoiding it and kicked on the edge of another chair and almost fell! Gosh! It was so embarassing, especially when everyone’s attention was on me! No doubt, a score of laughter went off right after that, even the VP who was the presenter told me to slow down. *LOL* Luckily I didn’t fall down, it would have been too embarrassing.

Anyway, that aside, I was so excited to get this prize! Kwailee, remember how we always hoped and hoped for lucky draw prizes whenever we attended symposiums? It’s really amazing. For the past 5 years or so, I have been attending similar symposiums in Penang and not for once did I even come close to winning. My luck has changed for the better! Or it might be just due to the smaller number of attendees in this symposium.

It even has Turbo, which apparently increases the transfer speed up to 20%! So cool. Best of all, it has a shock-resistant chassis due to the built of the casing, where the hard disk is actually ‘floating’ within the casing. I’ll let you know how well it works IN CASE I accidentally drop it in the future. *touch wood*

And finally, it allows you to wrap the cable around the hard disk, preventing messy wiring or misplaced wire. I really love this creative idea! I wonder why no one else has thought of this since it’s just so simple! My other hard disks have wires flying everywhere and they look so messy. The MiniStation has a neat and tidy look, not to mention its small and thin casing. I love it!

Reviving my wet handphone

It was a working day as usual, and I was driving to the office early in the morning at 7.30am. After finding a nice parking place, I turned over to the passenger seat to carry my bag, only to see a BIG puddle of water on the seat! *gasp* Then I realized that my bottle of 1-litre water was almost empty! The careless me must have forgotten to tighten the cap of the bottle the night before, and since the bottle was placed in my bag, it was major flood case. ((

The seat was drenching wet, and there was a puddle of water in my bag. A PUDDLE. And all my stuffs inside were wet thoroughly, with my handphone being the most vulnerable of all. I was terrified and used whatever I could find to dry my handphone first (meaning tissues). After somewhat drying the phone, I tried to switch it on to find out whether it worked or not. Bad mistake. Being someone with electronics background, I should have known that electronic parts that are wet would get shorted when powered on. Anyway, the phone did start up and stayed on for merely 10 seconds, after which it shut down automatically. Then only it hit me that something inside must have shorted and drawn lots of power until the battery was drained.

The next thing I did was to drain all the water from my bag first, lest more things got unnecessarily wet. Before I left my car, I also wound down my window slightly so that the water would have an outlet to evaporize throughout the day, under the hot sun. After that, I gloomily walked to the office, hoping and praying that my dear Sony Ericsson phone would not fail on me.

Once I went back to the office, I searched for help online, be it in the form of internet surfing or through IM with close friends. One good friend of mine who works in the telecommunications line told me to disassemble the phone and use a hair dryer to blow dry it, then let it cool in the dry air-conditioned air before assembling it. That sounded pretty straightforward, only that I didn’t know how to disassemble the phone! Another friend suggested putting the phone inside a bucket of rice because rice is apparently a very good dessicant. Being the impatient person that I was, I couldn’t possibly do NOTHING for the whole working day until only after work when I could place the phone inside rice.

So, I decided to pursue with my first friend’s suggestion, which was disassembling the phone! With the help of Bamboo and some online tutorials, I managed to disassemble the phone successfully! It is really not that hard, but you need the correct tools and the correct amount of energy to avoid spoiling the casing. So, here I present to you, the guide to disassembling the Sony Ericsson K530i handphone.

Tools required:

Small flat screwdriver (2-3mm wide)
Torx screwdriver

1. First of all, remove the outer casing from the back of my phone, followed by the battery and SIM card.

3. Next, remove the M2 (memory card) from its slot at the side.

4. Using the small flat screwdriver, try to dislodge the clips at both sides of the speaker cover. Be careful to just pry at the sides of the cover and not the centre, for fear of breaking the case. Try to look for opening to insert the screwdriver and slowly but firmly angle it such that the clips are dislodged.

5. Using the same method as above, dislodge the last piece of back cover using the screwdriver. Again, make sure you pry only at the sides.

6. Then, use the Torx screwdriver and unscrew all four screws that you could see at four corners of the phone. This would be an easy task.

7. Now the last part of the disassembly is to separate the front casing with the rest of the phone. This will need patience and energy to do it, because I took many tries but only managed to dislodge one side of it. Perhaps I was just too fearful of breaking the case into pieces. Luckily Bamboo helped to save the day.

Even though my steps are specific to the Sony Ericsson’s K530i model, I’m pretty sure it would be applicable to most phones (except Iphones, flip phones, phones which are not one piece, etc).

As for my little mishap, I left my phone ‘naked’ for the rest of the day in the office, until I went back home in the evening. Then, I used the hair dryer and blew dry it. Afterwards, it was assembling the unit back into the original piece! In my opinion, assembling is much easier than disassembling, because not much brutal force is required, and there is less risk of breaking or scratching surfaces. :/

Now, the most exciting part is, did the phone still work after the flood it went through? Let us see… Powering it on now and after a few seconds…

2 messages received! Woohoo! My phone was revived! *relieved* Thank god there was nothing wrong with it. Now you know what you should do in case you meet with the same emergency situation like mine.

Tip: Before assembling the front cover back, make sure you clean the inside of the transparent part properly. Use non-static cloth or cellophane tape if you will, to make sure there’s not even one speck of dust there. Else, you will face with my result. Look at my LCD screen, the dust you could see is actually trapped in between the casing and the LCD screen inside. And I’m too lazy to open up the whole thing again to wipe that off.

Happy New Year 2009 everybody! I just came back from a 1 week trip to Beijing, and fell sick with cough. Anyway, let me update my blog with more pictures with my new Panasonic LX3. Many people have been asking me to share more photos taken using this camera. This post will be dedicated more for indoor and night scenes, mostly shot within the vicinity of The Curve.

This was the Christmas tree outside The Curve and Cineleisure Damansara. It was around 7pm and all the night shots were taken without flash. Not bad huh?

I like how it was able to capture the scene without long shutter time. If I used my old camera to take this shot, I guarantee you that it would be so blurry you wouldn’t be able to make out the tree.

We decided to eat at Sakae Sushi because Saucer was up for something light and less oily. Luckily the place was still half-full and we were able to find a table easily. I tried to take a shot at the moving kaiten belt and was amazed that the camera could capture it without making the plates look blur.

After dinner, we walked outside The Street and took more pictures of night scenes. Taking pictures with the LX3 is a breeze! No worries of shaky hands or poor lighting. The camera would still be able to capture the scene as how you see it. A gem indeed!

Later in the night, we went to Winter Warmers for a cup of tea. Even in poor lighting, the camera was able to capture the surroundings without blurring the image.

Overall, the camera exceeded my expectations. It was definitely not as good as DSLR but it was impressive considering the size and its ease of use. I am so recommending this camera to everyone out there! The only drawback of it is the slightly larger size compared to other compact cameras such as Canon Ixus. Still, I’d say it’s a good tradeoff for the quality.

You must have thought I am going to give birth or something right? *LOL* Gotcha! In truth, my baby is my newly bought Panasonic Lumix LX3 digital camera! Thanks to my mother, who was so kind and generous to buy it for me, partly for me completing my Masters and partly to exchange the new camera with my old one. In case you’re confused, it means that the new camera will belong to me while I’ll pass her my old one.

I love the wide angle and the big aperture the most. I always had the problem of taking poor pictures in dim light conditions. So with this huge aperture and image stabilizer, I don’t have to worry about blur pictures anymore! Plus, the wide angle means that I could take more self-portraits with a larger background behind. No more big faces in the pictures. *LOL* Oh I’m so excited to put this baby into good use.

I’m sure most of you would be curious to know how much it is. Well, most shops are actually selling the basic package (include pouch + 4GB memory card) at RM1,599. However, after much searching and bargaining, I managed to get my package to be as follows:

Guess at what price? RM1,510! I know, it’s not cheap, but it’s the best deal around in Penang. I’m not sure about KL though. Anyway, I’m glad I bought from this shop because the owner seems honest and the shop near to where I stay. I could easily go back there for services or repairs in the future, if necessary.

So, what do you guys think? Brace yourself for nicer pictures in the future ok! OK, I take that back, you better not have high expectations in case of getting disappointed. In fact, just forget the fact that I have got a new camera. *LOL* Who am I kidding?
