Touch Down in Manila!

First of all, Selamat Hari Merdeka or Happy Independence Day to Malaysia! This year marks a special double celebration for those of us in Malaysia since our Independence day coincides with the Hari Raya celebration, which meant a longer stretch of holiday, not to mention the multitude of lemang and rendang as well. As for me, to enjoy my week-long break, I am now in Manila! We just arrived yesterday and boy, was it a long day! Flight was at 7.55am, which meant we had to wake up by 5am to go to the airport. Since we took the Air Asia flight which landed in Clark, we had to endure a 2-hour ride to Manila. *yawn* Along the way, look what I saw – Mexico! Little did I know that there was a Mexico in Philippines as well.

On the way to Manila, we stopped by for lunch since I was famished. We only saw fast food outlets in the nearby shopping mall, so we settled for Kenny Rogers which was supposed to be a healthier option. I was surprised to find out that they serve Pork Ribs here, along with their Rotisserie chicken.

The serving of pork ribs was pretty generous, and the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. Saucer thought it was a tad too dry though, but nothing some gravy can’t fix!

Another hour or so drive towards Manila and we’ve reached our hotel! We are staying at the Edsa Shangrila, located just next to the Shangrila Plaza and across the street from Megamall (both of which I intend to visit soon!).

Our room was relatively spacious, with a large King-sized bed with 4 plush pillows and comfortable sheets.

I was surprised to find that they are still using CRT TV in the room instead of LCD or Plasma. Not a major complaint since I won’t be spending much time watching TV in the room. What I love though, is their complimentary Broadband access! At times the connection could be fabulous, with speed of about 100kps, but sometimes there could be intermittent disconnection. Again, not a major complaint.

Coffee and tea are provided, together with 2 small bottles of water daily. The snack bar is well-equipped together with a section with mini liquors, but everything comes with a price of course!

As with other Shangrila hotels, bathrobes are provided together with comfortable bedroom slippers. Shoe-shining service is complimentary as well!

The bathroom is spacious with a full-sized bathtub within, complete with hot and cold shower. My only gripe is that they don’t have a proper toilet stall for the WC.

Our room faces the city, which meant seeing cars and buildings every day when we wake up. Perhaps a better choice would be the garden view or the pool view, don’t you think so? I wouldn’t want to get stressed by looking at the Manila traffic jam every morning

We went out right after checking in yesterday, and came back only around 10pm to find our bed nicely turned down for the night, together with warm lights switched on. Such a thoughtful gesture by the housekeeping staff. Now if you’ll excuse me, I should get myself ready to explore the shopping malls nearby! Update soon!

Then, we made our way to the World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge in the world, crossing from one end to the other – 428m! This was where Caroline had to face her fear of height while I took the opportunity to snap some gorgeous pictures from above.

To be honest, some of the parts of the bridge were pretty scary because the metal bars on the floor gave me the feeling of insecurity. But of course, it’s all an illusion. We managed to cross it in the end, all of us.

We then moved on to Wagon on Wheels, which is a small-scale Ferris Wheel. Over here, you’d see Caroline feeling more relieved and happy.

Before we moved on to the water theme park, the guys went on the scary Pirates Revenge – Malaysia’s first 360-degree Rotating Pirate Ship! Needless to say, timid people like me wouldn’t be up there. Spot the guys in one of the rows!

It was overall a fun and eventful day, not to mention the water slides that we played after. No pictures of the water park since all our cameras were kept inside the locker by then. A Promise of Sun, Sea and Sand

It’s Happy Travel Tuesday again! It’s high time for another travel post, don’t you think so? I have just returned from a very relaxing and beautiful trip in Phuket, Thailand, with a horrendous tan! Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against tan, but I think it must be my bikini that is giving me lines in all the wrong places. Anyway, let’s go for a short introductory entry (while I recuperate from my bout of food poisoning yesterday ) on our first day in Phuket, shall we? We reached our hotel, Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort, at the early hour of 9am, thinking we might not be able to check in so early.

The kind hotel staff put us at ease with some welcome drinks and a mini flower lei each, while asking us to wait for half an hour for our room. Thanks to the free wireless broadband in the lobby, we were entertained for the next 45 minutes until our room was finally ready. Located at the Karon beach, Le Meridien Phuket has its own private pristine beach that is clean with very fine sand. Walking on the sand was like walking on a bed of soft snow, except that it wasn’t cold. The best part about it was how secluded and private the beach was. I spent a few days lying on a sun bed alone and falling asleep and felt totally safe about it!

Once our room was ready, we were led by the nice concierge lady who looked eager to please. Along the way, we passed by a row of shops and a few gigantic pools with water so blue we felt like jumping into it straightaway!

Our room faced the garden and had a huge King sized bed with four fluffy pillows on it. The bed was one of the most comfortable that we’ve slept on before – firm and sturdy yet soft, it was heavenly.

Next to the bed was a dressing table with a mirror and night lamp. This ended up to be Saucer’s working desk instead, with his laptop perched on the table every night while I watched the LCD TV.

I like how wooden and rustic the whole room was, reminding me that I was in a tropical country. The amenities in the room were rather complete. There was a hair dryer inside the drawer of the dressing table, an ironing board and iron inside the wardrobe, an umbrella, complimentary shoe-shining service and coffee-making facilities. If I really wanted to nitpick, I would prefer the hotel to provide slippers and tooth brushes as well. (Yes, funny that no tooth brush was provided)

There was a full-size bath tub with a shower inside the bathroom, which proved to be really useful after a whole day in the sun. Just soaking myself inside the tub of warm water with lots of foam did wonders to the body and the mind, I kid you not.

Outside our balcony were table and chairs but the air-conditioned room was so comfortable that we seldom made use of these at all.

What was even more amazing was their breakfast buffet, that had coconut drinks! Ah it was such a bliss to be sitting just next to the pool, sipping icy-cold coconut juice while enjoying the morning breeze and the sound of waves in the background. If this ain’t paradise, it sure was close to it!

Our stay at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort was indeed a memorable one, with fantastic staff and gorgeous swimming pools that I can’t stop raving about. It was a promise of sun, sea, sand and beyond. More about that in the upcoming posts, I promise!

The night of the launching was actually pretty enjoyable, hosted by Red FM DJ, Terry Ong. We were all ushered into a function room right after drinks and refreshments, to take part in a night filled with games and prizes.

The first game requested for 5 female volunteers, and feeling sporting, I went to the front of the room. The girls were then paired with a chef each, while I was paired with Miguel (Director of F&B). What happened after that was something I did for the first time in my life – molesting a stranger’s legs from top to bottom.

Well, the instructions were clear. The ladies were supposed to put an egg in one side of the man’s pants, push it up and across to the other side for it to come out, without breaking the egg. Of course, the tough part was getting the egg to cross over, and I had a hard time with it, thanks to someone wearing boxers. We managed it do in the end (yay!) and got a present for it!

After that, there were rounds and rounds of questions, which we were supposed to answer with the help of the website. The questions listed were all related to the hotel’s chefs, restaurants, meeting facilities and so on, and we were all given a very short time to answer them correctly. Stressed!

Another hilarious game was when Terry requested for a few guys, and asked them to hit the mineral water bottle with a pantyhose filled with tennis balls inside. Since the pantyhose was tied to the waist, we saw plenty of rocking action that night.

Relax & Rejuvenate at Philea Resort

Philea Resort and Spa, the largest and biggest log resort in Malaysia is situated in the town of Ayer Keroh, Melaka, covering 15 acres of luxury living and relaxation. Last weekend, a group of us was privileged to visit the prestigious resort for a weekend of relaxation and rejuvenation. Upon reaching the lobby of the resort, I was in awe with the architecture and design of the building. It was basic yet modern, with logs taking up a big part of the building. I knew it then, that I was in the middle of a haven.

After checking in, we were ushered to a buggy to ferry us to our rooms. But before that, we made a short detour to one of the 19 Philea Suites, spacious and elegantly furnished with a comfortable settee and a stand-up bathtub in the bathroom.

I was most impressed with the stand-up bathtub that had a shower head which looked like a telephone. Very tasteful, don’t you think?

Soon, we proceeded to our own rooms on the buggy. Along the way, we were surrounded by nature, greens and a waterfall. It was indeed a retreat within the jungle.

We stayed in the Pavilion Villa, and our unit was situated on the first floor.

Once we opened the door, what greeted our eyes was nothing short of heavenly. I was this close to jumping on the bed if not for Saucer forbidding me to do so, until he had finished taking pictures, that is. The bed was very comfortable and had huge fluffy pillows which I hugged to sleep that night.

The whole room was built from logs, thereby creating a very rustic yet cosy environment. The effect was nothing less than stunning. There was a woody smell upon entering the room, but it soon diminished after we left the air-conditioner on for a couple of hours. Our only gripe was that it took quite a while for our room to cool down, perhaps due to the scorching hot sun that afternoon and the fact that our room was on the top floor. Other than that, it was perfect!

The toilet was modern and well-equipped with a full-sized bathtub as well as a shower booth. I loved the giant shower head in the shower booth that provided a strong and dense water pressure. Bliss!

The toiletries provided were complete and neatly arranged. The basic body shampoo, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion were there, as well as cotton buds, sewing kit, shaver, comb, toothbrush, soap and shower cap.

Second Best Hotel in Xiamen, China – Part 3

As mentioned earlier in my first post of Xiamen, we were supposed to switch hotels after the first night. The second hotel, without a doubt, was much better than the one we stayed in. The next morning, we went for breakfast, packed and took a cab to the next hotel.

The hotel that we were going to was called Wyndham Hotel Xiamen, which is also ranked #2 by TripAdvisor. Once we entered the lobby, it felt like we were in a different world altogether. The majestic chandeliers were so grand and sparkly, the floors so smooth and shiny, and the area so spacious! Luxurious, definitely luxurious.

Soon, our room was ready and we were given a key card. Look, even the lift lobby was so classy!

We were given a twin bed room, but each bed was wide enough for 2 persons! It was larger than the standard size single bed, but just slightly smaller than a queen bed. Best of all? The bed was super comfy and the pillows were made from down. Heavenly!

Landing in Xiamen, China – Part 1

If you have been following my Twitter updates, you would have known that Saucer and I flew (again!), this time to Xiamen, Fujian province, China, about one month ago. It was technically Saucer’s company trip which was supposed to last 3 days, but we extended it to a week since we were already there. We arrived a day before his conference started, so the first night’s hotel was under our own expenses. I consulted my Beijing friends on the hotel recommendations and we ended up staying at this hotel called East Vanguard or Wan Jia Dong Fang (万佳东方) Hotel.

It is quite a pain if you don’t know Chinese whenever you visit China, because most of the communication is being done in Mandarin. Also, if you noticed, the hotel name is also purely in Chinese characters! So, if you’re Chinese-blind like both of us, you better start jotting down the names on paper. From the Xiamen airport, we took a cab to the hotel (by showing the driver my piece of paper ) and it was only less than RMB40 (~RM20) for the ride!

When we reached the reception, it was another headache as I muttered out the little Mandarin that I knew, trying to get my room reservation. Luckily, the girls understood my difficulty and were really friendly to me! Before long, we were given keys to our double room! I must say, for RMB288/night (~RM144), we got a pretty good deal!

The bed was King sized, with comforter and plush pillows. One gripe though, for I felt that the bed was a little too hard! *LOL* Also, I realized that out of the 2 hotels that we stayed in, both provided the tea-making facilities. I soon found out that Xiamen was actually famous in producing “Tie Kuan Yin” tea leaves, hence you can see loads of tea shops in Xiamen!

The room also came with a flat screen LCD TV! Not bad, right? But I didn’t really watch that much TV as most of the programmes were local and in Chinese.

Toiletries were plentiful and I loved their comb and toothbrushes! They looked like they’re of higher quality compared to the normal toothbrushes I found from hotels. Will show you a picture perhaps in the next post?

The Failed Attempt

Remember my visits to the 2 wineries before this? After going to All Saints Estate and Campbells Winery, we thought of going to a beer brewery for a change. From the flyers, we saw one which was only 10km away, called Vintara Winery & Brewery. So, excitedly we drove towards Vintara and saw this signboard. Vintara had BOTH a winery and brewery. Apparently, the word Bintara was coined to represent the Beer Brewery, Beer + Vintara = Bintara.

The sky was as usual blue, and the weather was sunny but cool. Sitting outdoors at the vineyard in this gorgeous weather was simply out of this world.

We soon made our way to the cellar door, in hopes of finding a brewery.

Once we’re in, the place was empty except for barrels and modern wine filters. There was no one there, until we called out a few times. When the person in charge came, he was friendly and welcomed us. We eagerly told him that we were there to visit the brewery but alas! He said the brewery was already closed down 6 weeks before that! What they were running now was just a winery. Oh dear! You can’t imagine how disappointed we were, to have so much hope only to be let down. *sigh*

Since we were already there, he offered to let us try to wine instead. We tried a few glasses but didn’t find any that we liked, so we thanked him and left. By then, it was already close to 5pm, where most wineries or breweries would have closed.

That was failed attempt number 1. To cheer us up, we went to Mc Donald’s! *LOL* We’re easy to please eh?

The burgers at McDonald’s here looked different and tasted different too. They had more of the healthier versions of burger. For example, the Seared Chicken Deluxe I had was a piece of seared chicken breast which was low in fat, as opposed to the deep fried chicken thigh we have in Malaysia. They also used sourdough bun instead of the normal sesame seed bun we have here.

As for Saucer, he opted for something huge – the Grand Angus. This burger was filled with a thick and tender Angus beef patty, red onion rings, cheese, tomato, gourmet salad mix, and served on a soft sourdough bun. Getting thumbs-up from him!

We went back to Lake Mulwala after that and called it a day. The next morning, our determination was still strong on finding that beer brewery, so we headed a bit further to Boorhaman, where a famous local brewery was at. Boorhaman was situated about 40km from Lake Mulwala, so we started our journey early in the morning.

The whole journey was along country roads, sandwiched in between lush greenery and lots of farm animals. I was particularly fascinated by how livestock were left alone in the open, with no one monitoring them. They seemed to be pretty contented on their own, munching away the green grass, oblivious to the surroundings.

Make A Wish on Mooncake Festival

Happy Mooncake Festival everyone! Yesterday marked the 15th day of the eighth month in Lunar Calendar, also known as Mid-Autumn Festival. During this day, the moon appears to be at its largest and roundest, and mooncakes are often eaten, while lanterns are lit. This year, I happened to be back in my hometown a few days before the big day, so we celebrated it at home with family members.

As usual, my mom would light up paper lanterns around the house as decoration. All these paper lanterns made the house look really colourful and pretty! But this year, we had something extra! Apart from paper lanterns, we had Wishing Lanterns (Hung Ming lantern) as well. One is supposed to write his or her wishes on the lantern before lighting it up and let it rise into the sky.

My humble abode

I have been meaning to put up these pictures ever since I moved down to KL 2 months ago. Somehow, I got caught up, first with unpacking my 2 cars worth of stuff *gasp* and later many other random things and events. Anyway, I’m just going to show you some pictures of my new home! *excited* To make things clear, I did not buy this apartment, it is merely rented for a year.

What I love about this apartment is that it’s a standalone building with only one block! Unlike most of many other apartments that you can find these days, there are many blocks and many stories, such that it gives you a congested feeling. This apartment, however, only has one block with a mere 16 storeys. So, the density is definitely on the low side.

Besides, there is plenty of parking area in front of the apartment, so one does not have to worry about having no place to park the car. Let me show you the pretty pool just behind the apartment! It is surrounded by plenty of coconut trees to keep the temperature down and to provide shade from the sun.

The pool is not big but the good part is that it is mostly unoccupied and clean. On weekday evenings, the pool is mostly used by 2 or 3 persons, sometimes none. But too bad I seldom swim now, because the chlorine is really cruel to my hair.

Moving on, let me present to you my living room! The whole apartment is fully furnished, right up to air-conditioner and water heaters! Isn’t that great? The living room was decorated by the owner and I have no complaints about it, except that the weather is pretty hot in the afternoon. And I just love the floor! Most of the apartments these days use tiles, which tend to be sticky and oily after a few days of walking. This laminated floor does not have that problem at all.

The dining area is spacious and has a sliding door with a background to boot! The sliding door is killing 2 birds at the same time by providing a nice backdrop and shielding the smoke from the kitchen.

Last but not least, the apartment is equipped with a nice solid wood built-in kitchen cabinet with a kitchen top as well. I love kitchen cabinets! They make our life in the kitchen so much better and convenient.

Of course, the picture shown here was taken before I actually moved my stuffs in. You can imagine the kitchen top with more equipment now ranging from a toaster oven, kettle, rice cooker, slow cooker and water bottles. Yes, I do cook.

This 3-room apartment is more than what I would expect for the rental that I’m paying. I definitely see myself enjoying my stay here for the next one year.
