Shopping Paradise in Bangkok?

They always tell me, Bangkok is a shopping heaven. Since it was my first time there, I had to to make sure that I did not miss out on the opportunity to immerse myself in the land of shopping, which was the reason why I ended up at Platinum Fashion Mall. This mall, specializing in fashion and accessories for both retail and wholesale, is located on Phetchaburi Road, Bangkok. Getting there was pretty straightforward, although some amount of walking was necessary.

Platinum Fashion Mall

BTS Station

Using the BTS Sky Train, I stopped at Chit Lom station and walked towards Gaysorn Plaza. Walk past Gaysorn Plaza, crossing the overhead bridge to the opposite side of the road, and take the exit towards the right (north) side of you. Keep walking until you past Big C on your right and the huge Central World shopping mall on your left, and you reach a junction to turn left. Platinum Fashion Mall is just in front of you, with Pratunam Market located across the road.

The streets of Bangkok are usually busy, with cars coming from all directions. Even though there were traffic lights for pedestrians, I noticed many who crossed the road arbitrarily since the cars were jammed up anyway. As for me, trying to blend in, I followed suit. Soon, I saw the signs of the Pratunam Market and knew that I was very near the mall.

Even though Pratunam Market is the place to hunt for cheap bargains, it was getting a little unbearable for me to be under the heat in the non-air-conditioned market. It must have been the hot and humid weather, for I was already sweating buckets by the time I reached the market. The air-conditioned Platinum Fashion Mall definitely seemed like a better alternative for me to seek respite from the scorching afternoon sun. And so, the choice was made. It was Platinum instead of Pratunam.

The Platinum Fashion Mall boasts 6 storeys of shopping with each level specializing in different category. But as you can see from the information board below, much emphasis was placed on Women’s fashion, with almost 5 storeys dedicated to it. The Men and Children wear occupy half a floor each, while Accessories occupy another half. It was a massive jungle of clothes, clothes and more clothes!

People here shop by the trolleys! It is not uncommon to see ladies walking around and pulling an empty trolley bag in the morning, only to see it filled to the brim when evening comes. The way shopping works here is that you’re encouraged to buy in bulk to get the wholesale price. Most of the shops offer retail price if you purchase only 1 piece, and a wholesale price (usually 20-30% cheaper) if you purchase 3 pieces and above. Also, no trying of clothes is allowed, so to be safe, perhaps bring a measurement tape or trust in the free size.

Part of the women clothes’ level

I managed to get quite a few dresses from this mall, with prices ranging from 160 to 380 Baht each. Even though you are buying only one piece, never miss out on the chance to bargain! You’ll never know some stores are happy to give you that discount even if it’s just 10%. ;)

Whole floor of accessories

Next to Zone 1 and 2 of the mall is Zone 3, which was recently built a few months ago. You can get here through the McDonald’s on the ground floor. There were several floors here dedicated to shoes and bags! This was also where I got 2 pairs of sandals. :)

The mall is so huge with so much to see that the hours just flew by without me realizing. Before long, it was time to head back to the hotel to meet up with Saucer. Walking back towards the BTS Station, I was faced with the legendary after-work rush hour jam. It was one thing to be walking under the hot and humid weather, but another thing to be bombarded with endless sounds of horns. Boy was I glad I was taking the train!

The visit to the Platinum Fashion Mall on my own was overall a very enriching experience, and one that brought me closer to the taste of Bangkok life. True enough, this was indeed a shopping paradise, especially for ladies. ;) Stay tuned for the other more well-known sister shopping paradise in Bangkok, coming up soon!
