Flavours from The Hill

The Hill is a relatively new (less than 1 year old) bar and dining outlet situated in a converted bungalow built on a slope. After hearing so much about it, we were there one night together with several of Saucer’s colleagues for dinner. On the evening that we reached, it was raining very heavily, causing the area to be rather quiet and parking to be vast. We managed to park by the road side just opposite the restaurant, with no one coming to ask for money. I had to make a special mention on this since there are many bad comments about the poor and rude jockey service who apparently forces you to pay for parking even if you park on the road side. That aside, the entrance to The Hill was a long flight of stairs that would first lead you to their alfresco drinking area, followed by another flight of stairs to their indoor lounge and finally, the last flight of stairs to their restaurant.

After surviving the last flight of stairs, we reached a quiet area dimly lit with candle light on each table. The ambience was romantic and cozy, with music playing in the background.

We were there during their Happy Hours which last until 7.45pm daily, in time to order a pint of draught beer to get a half pint for free.

While waiting for the rest of the party to arrive, some finger food were ordered, including the Chicken Fingers which was the most popular snack on the table. The golden boneless chicken fillets were deep fried with a light and crispy batter while maintaining a moist interior. Served hot off the pan, these could burn your tongue if you’re not careful but once you savour them, it’s so addictive especially with the honey mustard sauce. This was the perfect finger food for our beer.

The Garlic Bread was decent with crispy edges and soft insides. It was also relatively cheap at only RM3 per serving.

Another favourite of the night was the Spicy Chicken Wings, which were served piping hot with fiery chicken skin. The wings were fried perfectly and not overly oily, although I would prefer them to be more spicy. Fret not, as they provided a plate of chilli sauce on the side.

For appetizers, I would recommend the Soft Shell Crab Salad, that is if you’re a soft shell crab lover like me. The crab was freshly fried and was still warm and crispy when served on a bed of greens, cherry tomatoes and sprouts. Mix them well and you’d get a savoury salad with a nice crunch from the crabs and fresh leaves.

One of their items in the Hall of Fame was the Wasabi Pan Fried Chicken Fillet. I have to admit that I was a little dubious with the combination of chicken and wasabi but I was surprised that it worked pretty well. The layer of wasabi was mixed with cheese and melted on top of crispy fried chicken fillets. The hint of wasabi was prominent and distinguished but not overpowering, making this quite a delight combination.

Spaghetti Vongole was cooked al-dente in a spicy seafood sauce. It was in fact, too spicy for some to handle, but I found it to be bearable. The clams were generous and fresh, and the portion of pasta was pretty huge, too.

But given a choice, I would prefer the Marinara Linguine to the Vongole simply because the Marinara was so much more flavourful with plenty of seafood within. There were several medium size prawns, mussels, clams and calamari rings buried within the bed of linguine. The napoli sauce was also pleasant without the overpowering sour taste that is common in most marinara pastas. If I had a bigger stomach I would have polished off this plate on my own.

Someone on our table ordered the Pan Fried Salmon and the reasonably large piece of fillet was tender and smooth, with a juicy bite. I also loved that it was served on a bed of spinach, which was a refreshing change as opposed to a bed of mashed potatoes.

To be honest, the Lamb Stew could have been more soft and tender. We found this to be slightly tough and the portion of mashed potatoes to be too big in relative to the stew.

The Green Monster Burger was highly recommended by the waitress there and boy, was I glad that she did! This was a giant lamb burger topped with pesto sauce and calamari rings, sandwiched in between the burger buns. The savoury lamb fillet was very tasty with oozing cheese and pesto on top, and had the right thickness that gave the burger a very fulfilling bite. If you love burgers, go for it!

Dessert was Chocolate Brownie with Ice-Cream and Churros. The brownie was served warm and the ice-cream was served separately in its own plate. I thought that was a nice touch since this would prevent the melted ice-cream to soak the brownie’s bottom unnecessarily. And as with most desserts, the combination of chocolate and ice-cream in a hot and cold mixture mostly never fail to work! :)

Long table dining

Dinner was a combination of hits and misses but my most memorable dishes would be the burger and chicken wings. The dimly lit environment could also prove to be rather romantic if there wasn’t any big party going on. Besides, the feeling of dining on top of a hill somehow adds a classy touch to the whole experience, although that meant climbing up several flights of stairs. ;)

i know it’s evil, but it can be fun to sit at the tables in the alfresco area near the top of the staircase. people are constantly tripping/stumbling on their way up and down (some of them cos they’re tipsy, i guess). but of course, nobody actually gets injured (phew!) :D

the parking guys there are bad news. I parked on the street and they were charging RM10. (at night) I would not have minded paying buy they were quite rude and finally my wife and i walked away and decided NOT to have dinner there. A nice evening gone bad. Very Sad. Dont think we ever want to go back again.

    • iamthewitch says:

Oh dear, I heard stories about the parking there before too.. It’s too bad that they’re not doing something to improve the system. Rude parking guys are real turn-off!
