Italian Food at Silverspoon Trattoria

So what exactly is a Trattoria, I asked? A Trattoria or an Italian-style diner, is supposed to be less formal, more casual and offers plenty of food with a reasonable pricing. There are not many that call themselves a Trattoria around town, with Silverspoon Trattoria being one of the few. Casual ambience with hearty food, that’s all I looked for in Silverspoon, but did I find it?

We were there on a late weekday evening, to find the place sparsely filled with families who were dressed comfortably and casually, enjoying food while spending quality time together. I was getting the good vibes already.

We started dinner with some drinks, and I was very impressed with the Weihenstephaner Beer! It was one of those few beers that I fell in love at first sip. And I’m not even a beer person. It was very smooth and refreshing, with a very mild bitterness that did not even bother me. This was the perfect ice-breaker.

Appetizers started with Chargrilled Calamari Salad, with a generous amount of squid on a bed of salad. To be completely honest, I found the calamari to be a tad chewy and tough, though I liked the charred stripes on the surface. Someone on the table was sharing some tips on how to make them more tender, so hopefully these would be better next time around.

The Stuffed Mushrooms fared better, with juicy pieces of huge portobellos topped bread crumbs, herbs and cheese. The mushrooms were extremely fragrant and the juices were bursting with flavour. It would have been perfect if there were more cheese on top, me thinks.

When the mains came out, my eyes were focused on the one and only Duck Leg Confit, which was slowly cooked in its own juices, resulting in crackly and crispy skin. The duck was tender, flavourful and oh-so-good! I couldn’t get enough of the crispy skin, as well as the delicious gravy that it was served on. This was one of the better duck confits that I’ve tried, I’m sure.

According to the menu, the Chicken Parmigiana is the Best-selling item of Silverspoon! This plate of deep fried chicken topped with melting cheese and tomato-base gravy was surprisingly addictive! Not a fan of deep-fried stuff, I had my concerns before trying it out, but my goodness! They must have found the secret recipe in making this combination work so well. The chicken was not dry even though chicken breast was used, and the melting and gooey cheese complemented the chicken perfectly. It’s no wonder that this is the all-time best-seller of Silverspoon.

Coming close was the Braised Lamb Shank, which was the crowd’s favourite that night. The lamb shank had meat that fell off the bone, really. It was tender and juicy, served on a bed of ratatouille. Yes, ratatouille. It was the perfect acoompaniment for the savoury lamb gravy. Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

Then the Grilled Salmon Fillet had to come and amaze us, again. The piece of fresh Norwegian salmon was excellent! Extremely fresh, juicy and smooth, with the flavours well-absorbed within the crevices of the fish flakes. I couldn’t find any fault with it. Well, except for maybe, they should give us more of the crispy salmon skin! :)

Since we had the chicken, lamb, duck and salmon, we had to try the beef too. The Rib Eye Steak was made from premium Australian, drenched with red wine sauce. The wet and messy steak didn’t look very appealing to me but the first bite revealed flavourful juices within the very tender meat. Never to judge a book by its cover indeed.

Apart from the meat dishes we had, Silverspoon serves a wide variety of pastas as well. Since I was already full to the brim, I only managed to sample some of them. My favourite had to the the Linguine Pesto, served with pine nuts and sizable scallops! There were at least 8 pieces of plump scallops within, mixed well with the al dente linguine.

The Lasagne Bolognese deserves a mention too, for the melting cheese and minced meat were generous and well stuffed between the layers of pasta. The portion for this was huge so make sure you have someone to share this with.

As for desserts, we had a choice of Tiramisu, Creme Brulee and Chocolate Pot, all very decadent and satisfying. If I had to choose, I’d go for the Chocolate Pot – chilled and thick chocolate mousse infused with a tinge of alcohol (if I’m not wrong), making it sweet and a little bitter. Bittersweet divine love!

And to end the gorgeous dinner, we had cups and cups of hot drinks to while the night away. Cafe Latte, Cappuccino and Mocha for the coffee-lovers and Hot Chocolate for non-coffee drinkers. It was the perfect ending to the sumptuous meal, coupled with wonderful company for the night.

Dining companions in black

Don’t ask me why we all turned out to be wearing black that night! What a coincidence. :) At the end of the day, Silverspoon Trattoria lived up to its expectations for the food was good, drinks were aplenty and the environment, casual and comfortable. Just the place to go for that family dinner, or even a romantic date (they have a private area) without burning a hole in your pocket! Thank you Jessica for having us!
