Malaysia’s First Maid Cafe is Tenshi
Maid Cafe, a very popular concept restaurant founded in Japan, is making its way to Malaysia’s shores, starting with the restaurant called Tenshi No Cafe at e@Curve. Being a sub-category of theme restaurants, a Maid Cafe features waitresses who are dressed like maids, in particular, French maids. Their job is to act as servants to please the patrons of the restaurants, also known as their masters/mistresses. At Tenshi, when customers arrive, they are supposed to be treated as if they have returned home, with the maids at their disposal. I have to say this is a pretty interesting concept, although I am not sure of how the idea would be accepted by the general public.

Kurumi Chan, one of the maids at Tenshi
We had the opportunity to visit Tenshi No Cafe one night, and were pleasantly surprised by the kind and warm attention given by the 3 cute maids on duty that night. What makes a maid cafe stand out from the rest of the restaurants is the services they offer, apart from food! Don’t get me wrong, by services, I meant the following:
- A Polaroid photo with the maid of your choice – RM8
- A round of conventional games / PlayStation 3 with the maid (max. 5 minutes) – RM5
- Spoon-feed by the maid – RM3 for 3 spoons
So does this tickle your fancy?
The environment of the restaurant was largely pink and white, with a spacious area decorated with lots of Japanese figurines.

Before we ordered our food, we were shown the 10 commandments of Maid Cafe. Reading some of them was really amusing! But most importantly, they practice a strict policy of no photographing of the maid.

10 Commandments of Maid Cafe
Out of the 3 maids who were serving us that night, my favourite was Kurumi Chan, which is why you’d see her being featured more on this post!
She was dressed to look really similar to Japanese anime characters, don’t you think so? Super cute and adorable! Best of all, she’s always all smiles!

The adorable Kurumi Chan
Apart from the maid services offered by Tenshi, there is a pretty concise menu of food and drink items to be served. The Banana Milk Shake was a crowd’s favourite, with a pleasant aroma of bananas and refreshing to drink. If you’re adventurous enough, you could even ask for it to be mixed with Coke for a different effect.

Banana Milk Shake (RM9.50)
While waiting for our main courses to arrive, we had some snacks to be shared.

Edamame (RM8.90)

Salmon Fish Ball (RM9.90)

Karaage (RM9.90)
One of their daily specialties is the Kawaii Bento-Bento, which is a box of cutely arranged bento with different selection every night. The choices that we had on Monday night were Fish N Ship and Couple Hangout. To be honest, I found the food portion to be too small even for a girl, but I guess the value goes to the effort of preparing this bento itself. Both of these bento tasted not bad too, especially the well-flavoured teriyaki chicken.

Couple Hangout – Teriyaki chicken (RM19.90)

Fish N Ship – Unagi (RM19.90)
Since we’re already at the Maid Cafe, we couldn’t help but to try out their notable services. One of our dinner mates, Thomas volunteered to be fed by the maids. But before that, he had to follow their lead to put some ‘charm’ on his food! Apparently, the food would taste better with this charm. I wouldn’t know.

Putting some ‘charm’ to the food
And then, the action began! To make things better, he was fed by not one maid but two of them! Watch the video below to see his satisfied look!

Spoon-feed me!
Some other dishes we had that night included the Una Toji Rice and Katsu Curry Rice. I personally preferred the Unagi rice which was served piping hot on a bed of eggs and rice. Quite a comforting combination, coupled with some sweet strawberries.

Una Toji Don (RM21.90)

Mango Curry Rice (RM19.90)
The Mango Curry Rice was pretty interesting though, with cubes of sweet mango on top. Combining that with the curry was a balance of spicy and sweet. My only gripe was that the curry was a tad peppery and salty.

Katsu Curry Rice (RM19.90)
Seafood Spaghetti was served with large prawns and mussels. I was glad to find that the prawns were fresh and succulent.

Seafood Spaghetti (RM23.90)

Dining environment of Tenshi No Cafe
It was overall a pretty eye-opening experience, not so much on the food, but the whole idea of being served by cute-looking maids who provided more than just food. It’d be interesting to know if this kind of concept restaurant could survive in the local Malaysian scene though.

She does look like a Japanese, doesn’t she?
But she’s not, I think.. hehe
In a Maid Cafe the maid doesn’t use their own name. They are doing role playing. So you might see each maid will have a distinct personality.

Wow! They’re here? Must go! Must go! The Japanese culture is blooming in KL. ‘Feeding’ by the maid is a unique service..

The place and the food is kawaii! When you first mentioned “services” I was getting kind of iffy about it. LOL. A maid cafe has also opened up here in Manila I wonder if it’s as nice as Tenshi No Cafe.

A little on the degrading side in my opinion much like the ‘no hands’ restaurant for men only in Korea. Would u let your daughter work in such concept establishment?
A very interesting concept — I can see how some people’s knee-jerk reaction would be a negative one. But the food looks delicious.
The question is: do they have male butlers with similar services? Even better if they show the butlers doing dishes and other household chores (like dusting or vacuuming). I hv a feeling it’ll be a hit with the ladies :p

OMG, i wonder this model will work for long in KL?? frankly, i think they should have more “higher quality” Lolita there, haha, or maybe they are not my cup of tea but those more desperate guys, hahahaha~~ anyway, i like the deco of the cafe though..
BTW, i thot you are not supposed to take photo of the Lolita and the food?? but you just did everything~~

Hello, nice post but there’s a correction. ^^
Tenshi no Cafe isnt the first maid cafe in Msia, Kirameki Cafe was the first and it’s located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Thanks for the info! I guess that means Tenshi is the first Maid cafe in West Malaysia then!
Ahh so sorry dear ;A;
The first was in Penang, not Kirameki >.<
Merrine recently posted..Aika
Ahh.. I saw the Penang maid cafe but it seems that they only have waitresses dressed in maid uniforms without providing the ‘services’. The actual maid cafe provides services on top of food.

Somehow I would think those maids are annoying haha. I might get pissed off and whack them if they continuously act cute in front of me. hahahahaha.
yayaya… agreed with you.
My little sister does that too in NYC . Sometime she talks like that to me and it just drive me insane hahah. Her pitch is too hight
Huh? Cannot take photos of the maid, the food and the interior? You broke this rule!!!

I don’t see how being fed by the maids can make a man happy. I know I want more than just being fed! Haha!!!

There are many theme restaurants in Taipei and I’m planning to visit one soon. This one is not bad, but I feel their rules of conduct are too stiff. How come photos are not allowed? Here in Taiwan, most theme restaurants are happy, if people take photo, share with friends, blog about them etc. And I guess you’re a celeb, since you could take pics there, hehe..
My Kafkaesque life recently posted..Trip to Nantou- Central Taiwan- 2011
LOL! I’m not a celeb of course.. but actually they’re not that strict when it comes to photos, as long as you don’t do it excessively? Taking pictures of food is fine too
wow, so cute! that dress for sale? i want to buy, if that sale in malaysia, and KL,
anyway i like the, figurine, the so cute girls, and
10 Commandments of Maid Cafe, << i like this
it says here this is malaysia’s first maid cafe..
however, i went to Klang’s Affin bank last year and there was a maid cafe there already.
Isnt the one at Curve newer?
Hi Winter, Tenshi claims that they’re the first that offer maid ‘services’ such as spoon-feeding or playing games. I’m not sure if the one in Klang offers such a service. Perhaps they’re just a restaurant with waitresses wearing maid uniforms?
The post title is misleading, no matter tenshi no cafe is the first that offer maid service or not, FYI tenshi no cafe IS NOT the first maid cafe in malaysia.
Amazing, I love those cafe’s, I have never be in one because the closer one it’s on the us and I live in costa rica but i guess that I could do something about it, thanks for the post. +10
Hi Dakuro,
Thanks for dropping by! These cafes are just so cute, aren’t they? I’m sure the craze will catch up one day in Costa Rica!
The maid cafe look good from what I have seen so far if compared among other maid cafes.
Is it possible to videograph/photograph for special occasion esp for my friend’s birthday event? I wish to my fren’s birthday trick; being as VIP. I guess it should be fun over there
Hi Westley,
Do call him up and discuss your plan with him, I’m sure he’ll be happy to accommodate, if only with a small fee. Good luck!
I think this question is better addressed to the cafe owner.
Hi i emma can i ask???
