5 Crazy Adventures to Celebrate Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is around the corner and this time around, I managed to coax the adventurous Ciki (aka @agentcikay) from Cumi & Ciki Food, Travel and Adventure to write for my inaugural guest post feature on this blog! Ciki, a fun- and food-loving lass with the unmistakable tan, is no stranger in the travel arena! It is my biggest honour to have her share with us, her idea of 5 Crazy Adventures to Celebrate Valentine’s day!
****************************************
People ask if I am a romantic person. Ah what can I tell you. I think I am, but probably not in the conventional sort of way. Let me explain why in a minute.
When I was asked to write this Valentine’s day guest-post by MY of I am the Witch, I cracked my head. Hmmm… Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).
Well, why can’t everyday be Valentine’s day? And instead of giving sickly sweet pressies to your loved one.. why don’t you give then a huge thrill instead.. by scaring them out of their wits. Nothing makes a woman feel as sexy as the hours that follow an adrenaline rush. Same goes of a man. I am of course, talking about using some of the hardcore Adventures available in Malaysia to hammer that romance back into your relationship. Talk about the perfect chance to cuddle up to him or have him help you on that challenging hike, to let him feel just how sure-footed, “manly” and strong he is! Ah aren’t these, after all, the reasons you fell for him in the first place? . If this isn’t showing your outdoorsy mate your love, I don’t know that is. Anyway, here are some of the options on how I would celebrate Valentine’s day with my loved one.. Ciki style.
1. Prove your love .. whilst airborne!
If you remember the character from ancient Mythology , Icarus, was the son of Daedalus who attempted to escape Crete by flight, which ended in a fall to his death. He made a pair of wings but the wax melted as he got too close to the sun, and he plunged to his death. Well, if your dream is to be airborne, this is as close to flying as you will get. And if your love for your mate is strong this Valentines, show him just how gutsy you are by taking on this adventure sport for two!

Powered paragliding
Powered paragliders usually fly between 15 and 45 mph (25 and 70 km/h) at altitudes from ‘foot-dragging in the grass’ up to 18,000 ft (5400 m) although most flying is done under 500 ft (150 m) AGL (above ground level). Practice begins on the ground. Learn to catch the wind and make a wall. It’s all just physics. Wind to the left, drop sail to the left. You need to get under the wind in order for your sail to stay up. Once you are skilled, put on your motor and let the wind do the rest.
2. Book a lover’s trip on a Mulu Adventure – hear the call of the wild!
Mulu is Malaysia’s adventure capital. Challenging jungle hikes, magnificent World Heritage caves, the ‘Pinnacles’, homestays in longhouses with native tribes and all set in the prettiest of tropical jungle landscape. Mulu is so teeming with adventure and you can even choose to mountain bike in Mulu, swim or raft the rivers, climb the ‘Pinnacles’ or Mount Mulu, hike the once feared ‘Head hunter’s trail’, burrow deeply in adventure caves, search out wildlife or choose to do it all at a leisurely pace.

Head Hunter’s Trail
The main attractions around Mulu are:
a) World Heritage Site – Mulu Caves (4 show caves): Deer, Lang’s, Clearwater and Wind cave.
b) Deer cave – the single largest cave passage known to man and home to millions of free tailed naked bats
c) Clearwater cave – named after an underground river system that flows through the cave systems and culminates with high velocity through this chamber. This is the longest known underground river in South East Asia.

Clearwater Cave
d) Lang’s cave – containing gorgeous formations that adorn the walls
e) Wind cave – named after its natural air conditioning and containing colourfully named chambers such as King’s and Lady’s chamber.
f) Sarawak Chamber - the world’s largest discovered underground cavity located in Gua Nasib Bagus/ Good Luck Cave, The chamber measures approximately 700m long, 415m wide and 80m high. In width, you could almost fit 7 units Boeing 747′s (5 unit Airbus A380) from wing to wing. In length, almost 10 units! (Almost 9 unit Airbus A380). To reach Sarawak Chamber is almost a full day and requires a reasonably fit person. It is in the adventure-caving category.
g) ‘The Pinnacles’ – a series of limestone razors that mystically jut out half way up Mount Api. The trail is only 2.4kms but the ascension is 1200m up a steep path to a viewpoint looking out over the Pinnacles. This is Malaysia’s 5 star hike!

The Pinnacles
3. Climb Mount Murud , the highest sandstone mountain in Sarawak
The Kelabit highlands is one of Sarawak’s last unspoiled regions with beautiful flora and a cool refreshing climate. The vegetation changes as you ascend and along the way, you witness the local life with plenty of opportunity to interact with the friendly natives, mainly Lun Bawang and Kelabit tribes.

Mt Murud Pitcher Plant Murudensis
The program includes a climb up to Mount Murud summit, which at 2423m/7946ft is the highest sandstone mountain in Sarawak. The first person to have successfully climbed to the summit is a Swedish Zoologist and Ethnographer, Eric Mjöherg, in 1922 after several failed attempts a few years earlier by J.C. Moulton who was a curator of the Sarawak Museum then. Mjöherg was astounded by the many species of plants especially pitcher plants that are endemic to this location. He documented many of plants and flowers, describing the mountain as a paradise which will forever be embedded in his mind. Many locals regard Mount Murud as a sacred location. Rumors of many astounding miracles are said to have happened here. Local folks make an annual pilgrimage to celebrate its majesty, therefore, it is no surprise that you will find a large church camp made of many assembled wooden houses on a plateau which can accommodate 1500 people. Use the perfect natural green surroundings to fall in love with your man all over again!

Adventures can be romantic, for sure! Devil’s idea of romance involves shopping though…
