First CNY Eve with the In-Laws
This year marks the first time I’m celebrating the Chinese New Year with my in-laws. According to the Chinese tradition, the reunion dinner is very important and brings significant meaning to the family on the eve of Chinese New Year. Since I’m now part of Saucer’s family, my reunion dinner this year was held at his mother’s place – a brand new experience to me. We were there just before lunch, to witness a table outside of the house, full of delicious dishes of meat, vegetables and fruits.

Vegetarian spring roll
It is our custom to give offerings and prayers to the ancestors first before we had our own feast. The table was filled with plates of chicken wings, BBQ pork, steamed chicken, pan-fried fish, yam cakes and fatt gou.

Chicken wings

Fatt gou (Chinese prosperity cup cakes)

Yam cake

Char siew (BBQ pork)

Stir fried vegetables

Steamed chicken

Table of goodies for the ancestors

So much food!
When all the dishes were ready, we burned some red Chinese candles and got ready to pray.

Burning Chinese candles
Each of us grabbed 3 pieces of joss sticks, burnt them and said our silent prayers as well as asked our ancestors to have a good meal on this auspicious day.

Even the little ones followed the tradition

We got married just before CNY last year, but we were on honeymoon in Maldives during CNY, so we didn’t get to celebrate it with the in-laws that year.

I do miss the get together our family used to have for Chinese New Year now that we’re living in the states… one of the very few occasions when we get to see all of our relatives together.
Those pics bring back good memories.
Happy Chinese New Year!!

Yep, I used to live in Penang and Batu Pahat and I’ve traveled all around the Peninsular part
I still have many friends there. Malaysian Chinese are more festive than Taiwanese. Also Malaysians decorate the houses, bake so much and invite many friends, in Taiwan it’s all on a smaller scale. And in Malaysia angpau givers are the married ones, in Taiwan are the ones with job (no fun), haha.. And Taiwanese don’t give 2 oranges when they visit. I think your way is closer to the one in Guangdong. Sorry for talking so much
