Guide to Chinese New Year Dinner 2011 in Klang Valley

Many people have been asking me how many times I have ‘lou sang’ or tossed the Yee Sang this year, and my answer is always ‘Never too many!’. :) I love ‘lou sang’ and I look forward to this joyous period every year – the get-together, the chatter, the laughter and the merriment of Chinese New Year! And all of these are done together with the company of good food and great people. Now, I can’t help with the great people area, but I do try to offer help in the good food department. Therefore, here is the compilation of the restaurants that you may find useful for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, together with a brief description and price range.

1. Dynasty Dragon at SS2 Mall

The Yee Sang here has the special concoction with peanut sauce in it, together with crunchy cuttlefish. Very delicious and fragrant, almost with a peanut buttery taste to it. The Signature dish was the Roasted Baby Duck.

Price: RM698++ to RM1288++ /table of 10

2. Gu Yue Tien, Chulan Square

The Yee Sang here uses lettuce leaves instead of the traditional shredded vegetables. The signature dish is the Salt-baked Iberico Pork Ribs that had me craving for it ever since. A definite must-try at Gu Yue Tien.

Price: RM888++ /table of 8-10 for Standard Chartered credit cardholders

3. Li Yen, Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur

A very traditional Yee Sang with shredded vegetables and fresh sliced salmon, topped with delicious plum sauce. The best dish was Peking Duck with Steamed Sesame Pancakes. It was perfectly roasted, golden, shiny and absolutely aromatic!

Price: RM888++ /table of 8 for Standard Chartered credit cardholders

4. Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur

The Yee Sang had us all in awe. Kudos to the chef for putting the effort in arranging the shredded vegetables of Yee Sang into an attractive shape of a rabbit on grass! The star of the night had to be Roasted crispy chicken with chili oil sauce. Very appetizing and tasty.

Price: RM888++ /table of 8 for Standard Chartered credit cardholders

5. Toh Yuen, Hilton PJ

Hilton PJ-11

Hilton PJ-26

The slices of abalone hidden within the Yee Sang were chewy and gave the combination a delightful twist. My favourite was the Deep Fried Chicken with Two Tastes, coated with a thick and black sauce, almost caramel-like, with a sweet and slightly savoury taste to it.

Price: RM888++ to RM1388++ /table of 10

6. Tai Zi Heen, Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Tai Zi Heen-2

Yee Sang was served with slices of fresh salmon, topped with the conventional sauces. The signature dish was the Traditional Style Steamed Cod Fish – amazingly smooth and flaky, with slight layers of fish oil in between the meat, almost melt-in-your-mouth finish.

Price: RM988++ to RM1488++ /table of 10

7. Flavors, Swiss Garden Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

Swiss Garden CNY-1

Swiss Garden CNY-8

Unlike the normal banquet, this is an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner, with a variety of local and international dishes. One of the memorable dishes I had was the Hot and Sour Sze Chuan soup, which was hearty and appetizing.
