Fabulous Abalone and Cod Fish at Tai Zi Heen
And so, we were gathered again for the auspicious occasion of ‘lou sang’ to commemorate the upcoming Chinese New Year. In case you don’t know what ‘lou sang’ means yet, refer to my old post here. This time, our dinner was hosted at Tai Zi Heen, which also refers to the royal chamber where the Prince meet his Generals to discuss his country’s affairs over a royal meal in the Chinese history. We are no prince and there were no generals present as well but we all shared one thing in common – a never-ending appetite for good food!

As usual, dinner started with the customary Salmon Yee Sang. The blend of colours from various shredded vegetables made the platter look very attractive and almost too nice to be eaten.

Fresh Salmon slices
The fresh salmon slices were placed on top of the Yee Sang only moments before we ‘lou sang’ while uttering auspicious phrases such as “Nian Nian You Yu”, meaning abundance every year.

Look at our dinner group that night, truly a 1 Malaysia culture!

Lou Sang – notice the 1Malaysia at work?
We were soon served with some sample dishes from their Chinese New Year set menu, the first being Double-boiled Pearl Shark’s fin with Bamboo Pith and Chinese Cabbage. This was served with a generous amount of shark’s fin, but if you do not condone the act of eating shark’s fin, do inform Tai Zi Heen in advance so that they could accommodate your needs by changing the soup to something different.
I personally enjoyed the hearty soup very much, though I thought the shark’s fin could be softer for a better texture.

The next dish of Braised Dried Oysters with Fatt Choy, Baby Abalone, Sea Cucumber and Wok-Fried Greens was really impressive in that a whole baby abalone was served to each of us! The baby abalone was the size of half of my palm, and had a springy and chewy texture to it. My first bite into it oozed a multitude of flavours, mainly from the dried oysters and sea cucumber, making it a delight to savour. This was indeed a masterpiece from the chef.

When the next dish of Traditional Style Steamed Cod Fish was served, everyone was ooh-ing and aah-ing away, knowing what lay beneath was a huge slab of thick and white cod fish. The cod fish was amazingly smooth and flaky, with slight layers of fish oil in between the meat, making it an almost melt-in-your-mouth finish. I’ve had this dish before and it never failed to impress! If I had to choose, this would be the best dish for the night.

Another of Tai Zi Heen’s specialty is the Stir-fried Prawns with Pumpkin Sauce served on Rice Nest, fried golden brown and arranged to resemble an overflowing pot of gold (the rice nest being the pot).
The prawns were nicely fried with the edges still retaining a mild crisp to it, and then evenly doused with lovely pumpkin sauce. Of course, it helped that the prawns were all huge, succulent and fresh to bite. This is definitely the case of one is never enough.

To end the lovely meal, we were served Double-Boiled Hasma with Red Dates and Glutinous Rice Dumplings. Still remember what hasma is? Refresh your memory here.
The dessert was not overly sweet, light and refreshing. Since hasma apparently improves skin complexion, I finished all of it within minutes. Yum!

The fabulous meal wouldn’t have been possible without the talented Master Chef Ricky Thein. What we tasted that night was only bits and pieces lifted off the set menu. To enjoy the full dining experience for the Chinese New Year, do check out their limited sets offered.

Nothing quite like a 1Malaysia Loh Sang… though I’d prefer to call it a Muhibbah Loh Sang myself.
