Heartwarming Fish Porridge for the Soul

Famous for its fresh sliced fish porridge, I have first visited Hon Kee Porridge early this year at its Damansara Uptown branch. Fast forward half a year later, so many new branches have mushroomed until one of them is just nearby my area! Last weekend, Saucer and I visited this porridge place with his mom. The restaurant was decorated and designed to be similar to the other branches, so it gave me a sense of familiarity. Look for the cute old lady holding a bowl of porridge on the wall. ;)

Over the years, Hon Kee Porridge has appeared in numerous press, as evident from the wall.

That night, we started with a plate of Choy Sum vegetables, blanched and topped with oyster sauce and fried shallots. Vegetables were fresh and young, fragrant with the generous amount of shallots on top.

Since the porridge comes in huge bowls, we only ordered 2 sets to be shared among the 3 of us.

Plain porridge

Their porridge is as good as I remember it to be – smooth, not overly thick or diluted and most importantly, delicious! In fact, it’s good enough to be eaten on its own, or with a plate of You Tiao (Chinese crullers). :)

Smooth and comforting

Of course, eating porridge in Hon Kee wouldn’t be complete without their signature Fresh Sliced Fish porridge, which came with a plate of freshly sliced raw fish on a separate plate.

The beauty of this dish is how fresh the fish slices were! You could smell the raw fish and you wouldn’t find anything fishy with it (pun not intended). The slices were pink and slightly translucent, the sign of fresh fish.

Fresh fish slices to be dipped into the porridge

Dip the fish slices into the steaming hot porridge to get the best out of them! It’s also fun to know that you get to ‘cook’ the fish slices according to your liking. Some may like it rare, some well-cooked,  or in other cases, medium. Whatever it is, the fish was smooth and firm, perfect to go with porridge.

i guess Hon Kee is now getting very commercialised already, i tried their outlet in Lot 10 foodcourt, totally disappointed as the porridge is so starchy.. the porridge i normally go for is the one near Pasar Seni/Masjid Jamek.. both the porridge and beef noodles at the same shop, i often have both.. haha!!

yesterday me and my wife went Hon Kee Porridge at Puchong branch, we found a worm in the porridge. it is so disappointing that the explanation given by the chef is the worm are from the rice itself. So,… what?! Is that normal to have worm in the porridge?! Well, if I sent to hospital that night, I am sure will make a report to the polis. Damm, I should take a picture before I complaint to them, yet we still end up have to pay full amount. CB…

Oh dear, that is indeed a disappointing experience, isn’t it? They should have checked the rice before boiling… most importantly, you guys are fine! :)
