Home Cooked Delight at Mums

It is always nice to have a hearty and home-cooked dinner after working a long day out, isn’t it? And it’s even better if the home cooked food is prepared by Mum. Well, not my mum, but the one at Mum’s Seafood Noodle House. :) I finally had the chance to head over there for a good and proper home-cooked meal with a group of friends.

Before dinner started, we had an appetizer of ‘Acar‘ which is actually a combination of pickled vegetables mixed with sesame seeds and grounded nuts. Needless to say, it’s very appetizing especially with the sour and spicy finish, plus it’s also healthy! :)

Since we’re in Mum’s Seafood Noodle House, how could we miss trying out on their noodles right? The Mum’s seafood noodle soup came in a large bowl filled with seafood goodness! The bamboo clams were huge and meaty, the prawn was succulent and fresh, and there were also a few slices of baby abalone! What’s not to like? Not to mention the delicious soup which was moreish and not overly milky.

The dinner continued with a plate of Bean Paste Garoupa Fish. I love garoupa fish! It’s the fish that my grandma likes to cook whenever we have family dinners, and I love it because of its firm and flaky but smooth texture. Of course, this is only true if the fish is fresh. Fortunately, the one at Mum’s did not lose out, and coupling it with its own bean paste sauce, I thought it was really delicious!

The Stuffed Squid was also fresh with plenty of fillings inside! However I prefer to have squid on its own to preserve its chewiness. Somehow, with the addition of filling inside, it resulted in the squid being softer than usual.

Ah.. when Lor Bak was served, I immediately reminisced about my life in Penang. Now, I can have one of Penang’s signature dishes here! This was huge, with thin and crispy skin and plenty of meat fillings! Yummy!

Curry Fish Head came next, and though it was aromatic, I felt that it lacked the spiciness and kick. Perhaps I am too used to eating spicy food? Other than that, it was really fragrant with the smell of coconut milk.

My favourite dish that night was the Salted Egg Yolk Fish Head! It was my first time eating something like this and I thought it was really unique! The smell was really aromatic, while the taste was just tantalizing! I am beginning to love anything that is fried with egg yolk. It just brings out a new dimension to the term salty. Very good, this one.
