Freshwater Prawns at Luen Fong, Tualang
Most people out of Perak may not have heard about Tanjung Tualang, a small town district in Perak, famous for its freshwater prawns. Previously a tin mining area, the ponds now have been converted to rear huge and fleshy prawns instead. Located just 20 minutes from Kampar, we were there one weekend to savour its famous prawns. There were quite a number of restaurants in Tualang but we settled for Luen Fong restaurant in the end.

There were about 9 of us and we ordered 2 kg of freshwater prawns, done in 2 ways – the Pan-fried (Kon Chin Har) and Steamed prawns. The Pan-fried prawns were really fragrant and savoury. It was a simple dish with minimal seasonings but the freshness of the prawns was unmistakable.

The Steamed Freshwater prawns were the highlight of the meal. One of the distinguished feature of Tualang freshwater prawns was their very big heads compared to the body, and the red skin. In fact, there are restaurants in Tualang that use non-Tualang prawns to be ‘mixed’ with the Tualang prawns to trick customers. If you look at the plate below, some prawns were not as red as the others, and we’re suspecting some ‘mixing’ to have taken place.

Tualang or non-Tualang, we never really know, but what I know was the prawns were really succulent and sweet. Each bite was oozing with the freshness of prawns, juicy and delicious. It was really different with sea water prawns. You have to try it!

Other than prawns, we also had Squid which came in a pretty sizable portion. The squid was springy and fat, with spicy peanut sauce. Very appetizing!

Aiyor…why do they cut the prawn’s head like that? They can get it out by squeezing and pulling…and the vein also – can be removed by pulling from under the tail. I get the seller at the market to do that for me… RM60 a kg??? *pengsan…..
