3-day Getaway to Penang!

Taking a break from KL food, I have some pictures of Penang food that were taken about a month ago when Saucer and I were there for about 3 days. We stayed at the Gurney Hotel, located strategically at the Gurney drive itself, facing the sea. The room was huge in size, and even though the hotel is a little old, most of the furniture were still well-maintained. The room rate was RM250nett/night and it came with a huge King-sized bed!

Love the view from our room! This picture was taken in the morning, when the sun was just rising, giving the sky hues of orange. So pretty!

The room was well-equipped with business facilities, such as the study table and most importantly, complimentary broadband access.

We reached there in the evening on the first night, and as usual, Saucer‘s best man Wai Lian became our tour guide. For dinner, we went to Khun Thai restaurant, dubbed as the Best Thai Food in Penang. We were there once quite some time ago, and were pretty pleased before.

Dining area of Khun Thai

The environment of Khun Thai is very tropical and rustic, with bamboo seats and tables, as well as thatched roof. During our first visit there, we ordered the refreshing sugar cane juice which was very useful in countering spicy food!

The hot and fiery Seafood Tom Yam Kung arrived first and I found it to be very spicy and sour. Saucer loved the taste of it but I personally found it a bit too sour for my liking, perhaps due to my gastric history. However, I enjoyed the seafood in it a lot! The huge and fresh prawns, the squid rings and fish fillet were all pretty generous in portion.

Yea we stayed at Gurney hotel, but I thought G hotel is the one you should envy? It’s much nicer, newer and definitely more expensive!

Yup…G Hotel is more expensive, but Gurney’s o.k. Not that cheap either. I usually stay at Cititel Penang, love the location – Penang Road…and cheaper. Rooms more or less the same (not like those tiny cubocles in Cititel KL). That’s Evergreen Laurel in one of the photos – I think that’s cheaper too?

P.S. I never bother to go to Gurney Drive anymore. Food not great, so very crowded, tables and stools so miserable…and the worst, people not friendly – quite rude, in fact…maybe because I’m the wrong colour!
