The Making of Wines!
Continuing from my previous venture to All Saints Estate winery, we moved on to another winery called Campbells. This was highly recommended by a local in Rutherglen Wine Region when we asked him where to get sweet red wines. Setting the destination in my Google Maps, we drove to Campbells Winery and saw some interesting road signs along the way. Yes, road signs that can only be found in Australia!

Kangaroos ahead!
Soon, we reached Campbells Winery. The size of it was much smaller than All Saints Estate, but the variety of wines was no less than them! We saw some Australian family buying wines by the carton just before us! Boxes and boxes were piled into the boot of their car. I guess it must mean that the wines here were either really good or really cheap?

Once we were there, we looked for the Cellar Door for wine tasting and to have a tour of the wine cellar.

Cellar Door
Once we’re in, we saw barrels upon new and old wine, creating a magnificent picture of the exquisite past. And the smell! Oh the smell, it was an aroma filled of oak, grapes and fine wine. One can’t help but to feel that one has gone back in time, experiencing a walk down the cellar of some castle.

The old barrels house Campbells’ famous and award-winning Muscats and Tokays, while the newer barrels contain some of the younger and more innovative wines from their produce.

We saw some of the older equipment used to make wines, which I will share with you here.Excerpts were extracted from the notes at Campbells Winery.
Original Hand Operated Basket Press
Used at every vintage from the earliest days of winery until 1973. The skins and seeds were manually shoveled into the “basket” or “cage” and then pressed to remove the remaining juice by winding down the overhead weight – this was done manually by two people, one at each end of the horizontal beam.

What an experience. Plus the wines are cheap! No wonder my parents didn’t want to send me to Australia to study. I might end up going to class drunk! LOL
