Road Trip To Beautiful Lake Mulwala, Australia

As promised earlier, my next post on Australia would detail on my road trip! Saucer and I rented a car from Hertz Car Rental for 5 days. We managed to get quite a good rate due to Saucer’s company being a privileged customer. :) We booked a 2-door economy manual car for AUD$36/day (cheapest we could find) and guess what? They upgraded it to a 4-door automatic Nissan Tiida hatchback (equivalent to Nissan Latio)! Awesome!

After we collected the car, we headed north towards our first destination – Yarrawonga! In fact, we’re heading to this lake called Mulwala, where Kendal’s parents-in-law had a place that we could bunk in for the night. Lake Mulwala is situated almost 300km up north, a good 3 hours’ drive away. This being our first road trip in Australia, Saucer drove carefully and we stopped at a few towns (Yea and Benalla) on the way there to rest and have coffee.

Even though the distance was long, the drive was pretty relaxing and had amazing views. There was virtually no car on the road, and all along we saw blue skies, white clouds, green fields and lots of cows and sheep. On top of that, the roads were mostly straight, making it such an easy drive!

3 or 4 hours later, we reached the house that we would be staying for the night. Quaint and homely, situated just minutes from the lake Mulwala. We parked our car and freshened up before proceeding to the lake.

Oh and I just have to say that it’s extra cold up in Mulwala, especially at night! Thank God for the electric blanket inside the room! :)

That aside, we then walked to the lake nearby, in time to watch the sunset.

Path to the lake

What greeted us was a sight to behold. Such calm waters, blue sky and lots of pretty clouds lay before our eyes. At that moment, we felt so at peace, to come face to face with nature’s greatest creation yet. The feeling was almost overwhelming, almost indescribable.

Beautiful Lake Mulwala

The garden next to the lake was so well kept and clean, and sometimes we could spot a few pigeons trying their luck with crumbs here and there.

We also spotted a cruise ship docked by the lake, which would have been popular during the summer. In winter, most people just preferred to stay in to keep warm. But that’s good too, because we would have the whole lake to ourselves! ;)

From the lake, we could actually look across and spot the pretty town houses.

Wouldn’t it be romantic to sit by the lake on this bench?

Love this shot!

While waiting for the sunset, Saucer tried to do some self-timing shot of the two of us, since no one was around to take our picture. :P This was one of them which turned out to be quite funny. I believe this was the 3rd take, and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing and posing. *LOL*

The sunset came at last, and it was over within minutes. We watched the sunset in awe, admiring its beauty and its bright fiery rays. Everything around just looked so much prettier at this point of time. Just like a short moment of magic.

Finally, it was time for dinner after staying there for more than 2 hours. The sight was definitely something to behold! Thankfully, we’re going to stay for the night so we had another chance to admire its beauty the next day! :)

The next day, we headed out early to hunt for wineries! Wondering what we found? You won’t be disappointed! ;)

Hmm… you were driving on road without divider, and you completed 300km in 3 hours?

Regarding the Lumix vs. 500D shots, apparently the former is nicer. But if the photographer behind the 500D was me it would be a completely different story lah, LOL…

What did you mean? :P Are you saying 3 hours is too long? We were following the speed limit there since it’s apparently quite a serious offense for speeding. :)

Haha OK, don’t let saucer see your second comment :P

Came over from KS’s blog. The image of Lumix is better with more vivid color. Wondering which image produces more accurate color compared to the actual scene especially the grass.

Life is so good in Australia….:-)

    • iamthewitch says:

Hi! Actually as KS has said in his blog, Canon’s pic is less saturated in colour, and in this case, the grass was actually greener than what was shown in the 500D picture. :) And yes, Life is certainly good in Australia :)

  17. very nice pic, both of camera give clean image.. ah australia, that place that i dreamed…
