Roots Ahoy! Boost up your ‘chi’ at Toh Lee
Apparently “When the radishes come into the market, no one will go to the pharmacies”. I wonder how true this is? Well, white radish has been called “little ginseng” in China, where it is rich in Vitamin C, aids digestive problems, relieves constipation, and dissolves gall stones, among many others. To experience the goodness of radish and many other healthy vegetables, I went to Hotel Nikko’s Toh Lee Chinese restaurant to sample their latest Root Vegetables menu.

Pretty table setting that corresponded to Hotel Nikko’s logo
The interior setting of Toh Lee Chinese restaurant boasted of traditional Chinese furniture with meticulous table setting and red carpet, giving one a feeling of being a royalty.

We started the dinner with a bowl of Double Boiled Sea Clam with “Wai Sun” soup which was light yet bursting with flavours. One could taste the hours used in boiling the soup, with a plethora of goodness coming from the sea clams and “wai sun”. It definitely felt good too, knowing the soup was not only delicious but good for the body.

As mentioned earlier, white radish has some very amazing health benefits, and because of that, Toh Lee restaurant came up with a special dish of Stewed Lamb with White Radish and Carrot. I have always been afraid of eating lamb dishes due to the strong gamey or “sou” taste that it emits. But this version of lamb was far from that! It was soft and tender, well marinated and delicious. White radish on its own is actually pretty bland, but combine it with the sweet carrots and you get a match made in heaven. The whole combination just worked wonderfully.

The Stir Fried Cod Fish with X. O. Sauce was prepared with fresh cod fish which was flaky and smooth to taste. What was more interesting was the vegetables beneath the fish, which was something I never had before. It’s apparently a type of vegetables which are only available during specific seasons. It tasted a little like a cross between scallions and ‘choy sum’. Interesting!

Seasoned vegetables – do you know the name of this?
We also had a chef’s specialty, the Roasted Duck in Hong Kong Style, which had oh-so-crispy and glistening skin. The duck meat was also surprisingly tender as opposed to the typical tough duck meat. The whole combination was just fragrant and savoury, reminding me of the roasted duck I had in Mongkok.

The Stir fried Shredded Turnips was a refreshing way to cook turnips. Even though it looked like a simple dish, it was a dish well thought of for its health benefits, without compromising on the taste.

Moving, we saw a dish that was pretty interesting – was it noodles? Or was winter melon? It turned out to be potato noodles! This was definitely my first time eating potato noodles, and it was even more interesting seeing how the noodles were prepared.

Look at the cute hand machine that was used to make the potato noodles. This machine is awesome, I could think of so many other vegetables/fruits that can be used to produce noodles now.

How they made the potato noodles
Finally, it was time for desserts! The first one was Yam Candy with Sesame, which was made from yam cubes coated with caramel. It was then quickly dipped into iced water to harden the caramel layer and make it into a sweet candy dessert.

The second dessert didn’t look very appealing but it’s actually pretty good. Made from mashed sweet potato and ginkgo nuts, this dessert went very well with the sweet honey. Definitely a sweet finish to a healthy and delicious meal!

It’s not very sweet, but fragrant with potato. That’s why they added honey on top of it to make it sweet
