Taiwanese Food at Fong Lye Restaurant
One of the more popular restaurants in the Gardens, Mid Valley is Fong Lye. As with most famous restaurants, there’s always a queue outside the shop, with people taking numbers and waiting for their turns. I was there on a weekday, and still there was a queue! Lucky for me, my colleagues who were there earlier managed to get a seat before I reached. So why do people like Fong Lye?

Fong Lye Restaurant menu
Fong Lye serves mainly Taiwanese food, focusing on rice, noodle and the popular Taiwanese snow desserts.

To start the dinner off, we ordered a pot of Chinese tea – Chrysanthemum + Oolong tea at RM12 per pot. There were 3 of us and we thought of sharing a pot. Little did we know, the pot only came with 2 cups. So we asked for a 3rd cup and the waiter said they only served 2 cups per pot. Any additional cup would be charged at RM3! Isn’t that ridiculous, you think? I mean, the amount of tea is still the same, why do they charge just for a cup? Next time perhaps I should bring my own cup.

As for food, one of my colleagues ordered the Smoked Duck with Glass Noodles set.

Springy glass noodles
Tried a piece of the smoked duck and was pretty surprised by the smoked flavour which was very notable. It was slightly on the cold side though, but the meat was tender and not tough.

The second colleague ordered the Fresh Tomato Fried Egg with Fish, which came on a little wok with fire below. Pretty cute, don’t you think? The set also came with a bowl of soup, some side dishes and a bowl of rice with minced meat.

Fresh Tomato Fried Egg with Fish (RM20.80)
The fried egg was smooth and the tomato gravy was simply awesome! Very flavourful and rich with tomato essence. Definitely reminded me of my grandma’s cooking at home.

As for me, I ordered the BBQ Drumstick set, which came with a piece of chicken drumstick with thigh. It came with a slightly burnt outlook, but it was very aromatic. Took a whiff before I ate it and it instantly stirred up my senses. I could tell that it was marinated with a plethora of spices and herbs, with some hint of aniseed as well. Just make sure you don’t leave the chicken on the hot plate too long for fear of burning it further. *LOL*

As for the side dishes, the soup served that night was seafood with pork ribs and winter melon. Although I enjoyed the soft and tender ribs, I found the soup to be a tad too peppery for my liking. It gave me a slightly heaty feeling on my throat after that.

Soup of the day
The other side dishes were nothing to shout about – some squids cooked in tomato sauce, a piece of fried beancurd and some zucchini.

Rice with minced meat
Overall, I would rate Fong Lye to be slightly above average, for their food quality and portion. However, if you are there during dinner when they’re especially busy, be prepared to feel that you’re dismissed just after finishing your food, for the waiters would come and clear your plates faster than you could sneeze.

Expensive chinese tea? How it taste like? I never tried before. Did you feel energetic after that?

It tasted like Chinese tea. LOL! Nothing really special about it…
Heard so much on this restaurant but never try before. So pricey yet so many people queue up means must be damn good. LOL on your comment “bring own cup”. Yea…really ridiculous.

Well some of the dishes there are pretty good, though pricey. But drinks are definitely on the steep side..
That’s a generous portion of chicken served. I remembered eating some fried sweet potato balls before and it was good. Other than that, can’t recall raving about the food there.

I know… the queue is pretty long sometimes. Even during my visit my colleague had to queue for 10 minutes, on a week night!
yeah, it’s always crowded with people.. have been there twice before it became popular, think the food OK lah, but not worth to queue up to give a try lor.. and they don’t accept cards, everything is cash term!! so inconvenient..

I still can’t accept that they don’t accept credit cards. What a way to do business, especially in a prestigious shopping mall like Gardens!
Yea I agree with you! Why no credit cards accepted!
Wow! Really ridiculous they charge an extra RM3 for a cup without additional tea! Yeah, bring your own cup next time, haha!
