Bou Bou Gou Xing at Kampar East Ocean Restaurant
East Ocean Restaurant or ‘Tung Hoi’ in Cantonese is no stranger to the Chinese community in Ipoh, for their quality food at reasonable prices. Just a few months ago, East Ocean has spread its wings down south to its neighbourhood town, Kampar. For Kamparians like me, this is definitely good news as we don’t have to travel all the way to Ipoh for good Chinese food, AND more competition to the local food scene would benefit no one but the consumers.

Fish wrapped in almonds
My mom recently dined at Kampar East Ocean restaurant and saw someone from the next table ordering this very attractive dish called ‘Bou Bou Gou Xing’ in Cantonese. I have been trying to find an equivalent English name for it but to no avail. Rising Steps to Success?

Bou Bou Gou Xing (RM150)
Anyway, this giant of a dish came with 3 tiers, and 5 choices. True enough, when the dish was being served, our table became the centre of attraction for that few minutes, with onlookers and neighbouring tables watching it in awe. We were impressed too, for their delicate effort in decorating and putting everything together on those super heavy plates.

Meatballs with lotus root
Of all the dishes presented, I particularly enjoyed the Bacon roll. It was certainly something new to me as Chinese dishes seldom present bacon this way. The bacon wrapped around some fish paste and it was very fragrant. The essence of bacon was absorbed inside the fish paste, with the sweet and savoury gravy providing a good combination to the dish. Clearly a delight on its own!

Another worthy dish was the Fried Yam with Prawns. This was unmistakable in terms of smell, for the aromatic yam attacked our nose buds even before we started eating. Each piece of yam was meticulously shaped into a circle, with the head and tail of the prawn decorating it, and the body (already peeled) lying across of it. It was a work of art. Best of all, the yam was fried to perfection! Not too oily and very smooth to taste. Bravo to the chef!

There were only 7 of us eating the dish and yet we couldn’t finish it! This is good enough for a table of 10. Of course, when you look at it, it’s quite similar to eating an array of dim sum, eh?

Kampar East Ocean Restaurant
This restaurant is located at a rather new premise in Kampar, very near Tesco. From Ipoh, once you reach Kampar, you will see Tesco Kampar on the right (can’t miss it). Turn right at the traffic lights, into Tesco, and go straight pass Tesco. You’ll see Kampar East Ocean Restaurant on your right, at a corner shop lot.
