Dry and Wet Bak Kut Teh at Yap Chuan

Continuing on my search for that perfect Bak Kut Teh in Puchong, I went to this place called Yap Chuan Bak Kut Teh after much recommendation from friends and blogs. Using the GPS, it led me to this place using the back roads with lots of traffic lights. Upon reaching only I knew that it’s actually very near the Yong Tau Foo place I had last time! And there’s a much easier way to get there! *LOL*

Teapot and cups

As usual with most Klang-style BKT, teapot and cups are on every table. Upon sitting, we’re presented with an array of Chinese tea to be chosen from. We chose the ‘kuk pou’ or Chinese tea with chrysanthemum. Self-service, mind you. So look for hot water situated sparingly in water thermos.

Also not to be forgotten is the big container for garlic and chilli. You can have as much as you want here, provided you’re prepared for the unpleasant after-meal breath. *LOL*

I was there with my family who came down from Kampar to visit. Since they’re more of the traditional BKT type of people, I wasn’t being so adventurous with ordering Dry BKT for them. I only tried with one portion first, and luckily, it paid off to stay on the safe side. For it turned out that they were not used to the Dry BKT taste and didn’t quite enjoy it as much as the wet. For me, I thought the Dry BKT here was much better than the soup version. It was slightly spicy, and with a strong fragrant that was pretty appetizing.

Dry Bak Kut Teh (RM10/portion)

Of course, to make up for that, I ordered 2 pots of Wet/Soup Bak Kut Teh of 3 portions each! *gasp* My grandma specifically requested for pork innards, pork belly and pork ribs. I, of course, asked for lean meat and beancurd sheet (fu chuk). The pot for 3 portions came to be like this:

Wet Bak Kut Teh at 3 portions size  (RM9/portion)

I must say I was a little disappointed with the soup version of the BKT. I’m not sure if this was the standard in general or it only happened that day, but the taste was too strong on liquorice  root (kam chou/gan cao), rendering the taste to be slightly bitter. The first few sips, it was not significant, but after 2 pots of it, the aftertaste became too difficult to ignore. To me, it was not as pleasant as the one in Fong Keow, Klang.

‘Bo li sang choy’ or Chinese lettuce (RM5)

On the bright side, Yap Chuan was pretty generous with vegetables! One plate only cost RM5 and they were fresh and green. So good that we had to order another plate later. Value for money, I’d say. Unlike the expensive BKT in Puchong that charged RM9.50 for a much smaller plate!

‘Yau mak’ or Romaine lettuce (RM5)

Overall, my parents’ and grandparents’ comments were that they had better BKT before with richer and more delicious soup. I had to agree with them, although the dry version was commendable.

I felt that Yap Chuan serves the best dry BKT in memory. And they’ve expanded back to Klang even, a few shops away from Teluk Pulai in Tmn Rashna.

Never know there is such thing called dry BKT…

BTW, last year when I had medical check-up, the doctor advised me to eat less BKT. So you probably should go to eat BKT less often.
