Fiery Chicken Hot Pot that makes you sweat

In my previous trip to Shanghai, China, I came across a new dish called ‘Ji Gong Pau’ or Chicken Hot Pot. Both Saucer and I loved it so much that we actually had it twice during our trip there! Little did we know, there’s something similar in Malaysia too! Imagine the look on our eyes when we saw it right at Puchong itself. Call me ignorant but I never knew we had Chicken Hot Pot in Malaysia. :)

The 4 signature dishes here

Without further ado, we walked into the restaurant to try it out. As I write this post, I have been to this restaurant for 4 times! That shows how much we love hot fiery stuff eh? ;) The waiters/waitresses here looked like they’re from China, judging from their Chinese accent and that they couldn’t comprehend the local Cantonese. The restaurant was rather spacious, with simple and straightforward furniture.

Most of the time, we would go there for dinner (as you will see why later). During this particular visit, our guest Wai Lian was with us, being his first time trying out Chicken hot pot too. He ordered the Plum drink, which turned out to be really refreshing!

Since Saucer was still having stomach discomfort that time, we ordered a medium size pot for 2. There were a few varieties to choose from such as the chicken, pork ribs, beef and fish. But since the restaurant’s signature is chicken, we opted for the chicken! It arrived around 15 minutes later, piping hot in a clay pot.

Once the waiter removed the clay pot cover, the aroma of spices, pepper, chilli and everything else just attacked our nose buds endlessly. It was an instant appetizer! You could choose your claypot to be non-spicy, mid-spicy or spicy. Since it was Wai Lian’s first time, we didn’t want to be to harsh and ordered the mid-spicy version. :) It turned out that we underestimated him because he didn’t find it too much of a challenge at all! :P

Mouth-watering and aromatic Chicken Hot Pot

It didn’t matter, because when we’re halfway through, we requested for additional broth and this time we asked for the spicy one! And now, Wai Lian felt the heat. *LOL* There were lots of ingredients in the hot pot, ranging from big red onions, carrot sticks, celery, capsicum, dried chillies, black pepper and of course, chicken! Needless to say, the mixture of all these made the broth fiery and hot! Literally! We were sweating in the middle of the meal, but thank goodness the weather was not too unforgiving at night. I cannot imagine eating this in the heat of the afternoon, possibly similar to a sauna session?

Plenty of ingredients in the chicken hot pot

The chicken pieces were marinated before hand, resulting them to be tender and bursting with spicy flavours. One is supposed to eat this together with rice, for a complete and satisfying meal.

Apart from the clay pot, they had a whole fridge with side dishes for accompaniment. The side dishes were priced according to the colour of their baskets, ranging from RM1 to RM4. During my visits there, I never failed to take the ‘fu chuk’ or beancurd sheets and the Romaine lettuce (yau mak).

The Romaine lettuce was always fresh and green, it was hard not to take it! *LOL*

And ‘fu chuk’ went surprisingly well with the hot broth, especially after soaking them inside for a while. The fu chuk would just absorb the broth unlike a sponge, hence bursting with flavour when you put it in your mouth.

I would recommend you to place the side dishes in half way through, when the clay pot is less congested. Remember to ask for more soup! Spicy one, that is.

The meal was really satisfying for both Wai Lian and I, while Saucer was just eating ‘mee sua’ from another stall nearby. Oh you don’t need to pity Saucer, for we went back again a few days later after he was good! :) If you stay around Puchong, you should try it out! Perfect on a rainy night, really.

*UPDATE: Unfortunately, this restaurant didn’t survive the competitive dining scene at Puchong and had closed down since.

Tried it before. Its taste ok. But surely not something you will think about when you are looking for something tasty. Anyway, should try and forget.
