Finally, Klang Bak Kut Teh at Fong Keow

After the somewhat disappointing Bak Kut Teh experience previously, Saucer and I fetched our guest all the way to Klang to satisfy our Bak Kut Teh cravings. It was already 8.30pm when we left, and by the time we reached Klang, it was already 9pm. While Saucer was driving, I was busy searching for a good Bak Kut Teh restaurant from Motormouth’s entry here. However, when we were making our rounds at Taman Intan area, we only saw 2 shops still opened. Weng Heong was one of them, but when we entered, the waiters hollered “Boh Liao”. So we came out and walked to the only other shop opened that time, a restaurant called Fong Keow.

Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh, Klang

And I was really thankful for Fong Keow, because otherwise, our 30-minute drive to Klang would have been in vain! There were only about 2 tables occupied when we reached, so we knew our orders would arrive in a jiffy.

I believe Fong Keow recently underwent renovation because there was a somewhat newer section next door, with marble tables and chairs. We chose to sit at the more fuss-free and typical red chairs area instead.

Without further ado, we placed an order of claypot Bak Kut Teh for 2 persons, even though there were 3 of us. We did hear of the larger than normal portions here before. Rice was served soon, and I couldn’t help but notice the slightly glistening outer layer of the rice, that somewhat looked like glutinous rice. Perhaps fragrant rice? Is this a norm with Bak Kut Teh, I wonder?

Rice that looked a little like glutinous rice

To that note, a few people have commented that the original Klang Bak Kut Teh is indeed served in small porcelain bowls as compared to clay pots. Pardon the ignorant me, but I still prefer my Bak Kut Teh to be steaming hot with lots of ingredients as opposed to just meat. Luckily, Fong Keow did not disappoint. Look at the steaming Bak Kut Teh in clay pot enough for 3.

Awesome Clay pot Bak Kut Teh

We ordered only the lean meat and intestines because the ribs were sold out. The amount of meat was  generous and in large pieces too. Just look at the picture below, each piece was actually as large, if not larger, than the size of a table spoon. And there were plenty of them inside the pot.

Large cuts of pork meat

In addition to pork, there were many side ingredients such as intestines, vegetables, mushrooms, beancurds and beancurd sheet (fu chuk).

Beancurd and beancurd sheets

Fu chuk is my absolute favourite so I requested for more of them. They gave us extra large pieces of fu chuk with only an additional RM2!

We also had additional enoki mushrooms at RM5. The whole concoction made the broth so thick, flavourful and full of herbal taste. It was really GOOD.

Ingredients in clay pot Bak Kut Teh

Even though there were 3 of us, we couldn’t really finish this clay pot portion for 2. The mushrooms really made the soup taste sweeter and so much better. Service was also really attentive. They refilled the soup for us even when we didn’t request for it. Best of all, the total bill only came up to RM30, with all the additional ingredients. So much better and satisfying that the measly portion and expensive bill from our previous visit. We definitely don’t mind driving all the way there again for our next Bak Kut Teh fix.

I think having BKT in Klang is still your best bet anytime! :) There’s a stall selling tong yuen (at night) somewhere in Klang too. It was featured in the recent Taste With Jason on AFC channel. One of the best tong yuen I have ever tasted. Been ages since I last visited.

  11. I has been ages since I last had Klang BKT and RM30 to fill 3 stomach, hey, it’s a steal!

The BKT that I had in Sabah was also served in porcelain bowls and they charged by bowl. The taste was peppery hot compared to here.

A definitely overrated restaurant I would say.

I feel like I was conned when the bill came out RM36 when I order 1 person bak kut teh, a plate of seafood toufu(8 pieces which the size is like eraser) and a yao mak(vegetable). My friend said that because we speak Chinese instead of hokkien therefore they chop us.

Besides that, they charge extra RM3 for golden mushroom for a single person bak kut teh which only cost RM10 that make up the total of RM13 for the whole pot. The taste is not that fantastic either and I consider it edible only. Seafood toufu which cost RM9 where I can easily purchase it readily at the market and it’s not like it’s homemade or anything special. Yao mak which is stingy in their oyster sauce that cost RM 8 where I can get it in PJ for a merely RM6.

Service is bad when I request for 1 extra rice and they gave me 2 rice which I have trouble asking them to take back. Then, they charge for 2 extra rice which I only notice after I left the building.(Well, I don’t really blame them for this as it might be mistake but guys do double check the receipt after you paid.)

This restaurant is now officially in my blacklisted restaurant.
