12″ Burger at Cravings, Sunway Giza

*Latest Update: Cravings is no longer in operation since end of 2010.

Cravings, what an apt name to describe this newly opened Kitchen and Bistro at Sunway Giza, simply because of its ability to satisfy our cravings with huge portions! It was my first time visiting Sunway Giza, a new mall in Kota Damansara, and I was impressed at how modern and chic that place looked! It gave me a feeling similar to Bangsar Village or Plaza Damas, some place upscale and not too crowded. Cravings was smack right in the middle of the building on the ground floor, with the signboard so bright it would be hard to miss it.

The interior of the restaurant boasted of bright blue lighting and modern architecture, such as this spiral staircase leading to the first floor of the restaurant.

Even the lights were arranged in a spiral manner – gorgeous!

I have to say the owner must have put in a lot of thought in decorating this place as the outlook appeared to be of a theme, and a synchronous one too. I couldn’t find anything out of place here, right from the black and white furniture, the comfortable couch, the spiral staircase, the blue lighting and even the green plants to balance the atmosphere up.

One could choose to dine indoors or outdoors, al-fresco style. This is indeed smokers-friendly.

We were seated upstairs, which was a slightly smaller area which was also more private.

There was even a bar at one corner of the dining area upstairs! Fancy a cocktail, anyone?

Without further ado, we were all seated and got ready for our first dish, the appetizer. Instead of the typical mushroom soup served in most Western restaurants, Cravings chose to serve us Chicken Soup with Herbs. This was a refreshing change and a delightful one, for the chicken soup was not too thick or watery, with just the right body and flavour. Not to mention the healthy broccoli topping the otherwise plain soup.

Soon, the main star of the night arrived – 12″ Cravings Monster Burger! We measured it and found that it’s actually just 8 inches, but no matter! It was still a TALL burger to be eaten! I challenge you to place an 8-inch burger in your mouth! :P We had to eat these by portions since we didn’t have such huge mouths. This tall burger had a variety of meat patties including chicken, beef, beef pepperoni, chicken ham, vegetarian patty and hash brown clapped in between two pieces of burger buns. One thing interesting to note is that the chef actually made these patties himself, and though they looked a little like those from Ramly burger, they’re actually home made! And a much healthier option, I must add.

We then had the Kongguksu, which was served cold. I must admit I wasn’t quite used to eating cold noodles, and with a sweet soup base to boot. This bowl of noodles was served in soy milk, which was a little sweet and didn’t quite get to my liking. Perhaps I’m just someone who prefer something hot and savoury when it comes to my noodles. :)

The Halloween Dinner, which was fried rice in a pumpkin, was on the other hand, more of my thing! The fried rice was done nicely with every morsel well-coated with the heat of wok, and it was very fragrant! I actually had a few helpings of this fried rice and never got tired of it.

The Triple Decker followed, with rice arranged in 3 different layers. There was a side of tomatoes, fried egg, cabbage and vegetables served. The trick is to mix all of these together with the triple layer rice, and be rewarded with a unique rice taste altogether. Not too bad, this rice.

Somehow, I find the chef of this restaurant is able to fry rice better than anything else. I simply loved the fried rice here, both the Halloween Dinner and the Delhi Fried Rice, which was a combination of 3 different types of fried rice. If this is your first time visiting Cravings, I suggest that you must order fried rice! Any one of them. :)

As for noodles, I actually had better luck with Sichuan Noodle in Chrysanthemum soup. Really, Cravings’ Chef is so creative in coming up with different soup bases for the noodles eh? The Chrysanthemum soup worked better for me as it was refreshing and had some cooling a soothing effect. This was also voted to be one of the healthy dishes that night.

The Macau Lua noodles came with a half-boiled egg, which was supposed to be mixed together with the noodles when served. These noodles were home made, and tasted not unlike the ‘pan mee’. Some might find it a little too bland, and Ken suggested to mix this with soya sauce to make it taste better. You could try this too.

Done with Asian food, we sampled Western food instead. Bear in mind that when you order any steaks, you get a glass of non-alcoholic wine for free! :) We had 2 versions of steak and one of lamb. The Grilled Steak with Hot Chili Salsa was pretty unique in that the steak was topped with spicy salsa which made it all the more appetizing. The steak was cooked medium well, with no traces of blood, but still so tender and juicy.

My favourite dish of Western food has got to be the DOM steak. But mind you, this REALLY does have the DOM benedictine liquor in it, so if you don’t like DOM, I don’t suggest you order this. But if you love DOM, you’ll LOVE this! The steak simply absorbed the DOM in it, making every bite bursting with flavour. Not to mention it’s tenderness yet again.

Every bite of DOM steak was filled with DOM flavour

In comparison to the steaks, the lamb was overshadowed, I must say. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that I don’t eat fatty meat, and lamb usually comes with some amount of fatty meat, not to mention that it has the slight gamey taste which you might love or hate it. It’s an acquired taste really.

We thought we’re done for the night when the boss served us this HUGE burger in the form of a shoe! How cute! it’s definitely my first time seeing a burger served this way, and I assure you, if you have ANY cravings for burger, this would certainly cure it. It’s so huge that it could serve at least 3 persons comfortably, I think.

Cravings House Burger (RM28.90)

Cravings House Burger was served with the same meat patties as that from the 12″ burger, just with a different type of bread. The bread used was from Delifrance, so you could be assured of quality!

When we’re done with food, we sampled the drinks! Cravings came up with some unique mixture of fruit and tea, they called it Infusion drinks. This was in addition to their Coffee specialty, which received some good comments from coffee-lovers that night.

I quite enjoyed the banana wild berry tea even though some might find it a tad sweet. I thought the mixture of the sweet banana and the wild berry tea provided a good balance that could serve as a dessert as well as a drink. Plus, it helped that I love bananas too! :)

We had an awesome dinner that night, all thanks to the hard work and effort of Chef Calvin, who has had years of working experience all the way from the UK!
