Mother’s Day Dinner at Overseas Restaurant, Jaya One

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers in the world! Yesterday was the second Sunday in the month of May, which also coincides with Mother’s day. This year marks the first year that I’m celebrating Mother’s day with my mother-in-law instead of my mother. Of course, this doesn’t mean that I forget about my own mother. I have in fact purchased something special for her earlier but haven’t had the chance to pass to her yet. She’s still in Europe for business trip!

Anyway, this year, we had a double celebration together with my brother-in-law, since it was his birthday too! We had dinner at Overseas Restaurant, Jaya One. It was my first time going to Overseas at Jaya One and the first thing I liked about it was the parking! I liked the fact that parking was ample in Jaya One, unlike many other restaurants which give us headache to find parking. The rate is also reasonable at RM2 per entry too!

Oriental decor at Overseas Restaurant

The decor in Overseas restaurant boasted of oriental lamps, amber lighting and comfortable table spacing. Food was ordered once we’re seated and while waiting, I took some opportunities capture the moment. This was Hanson Ho, my nephew-in-law. Caught him while he’s taking a sip of tea! *LOL*

Soon, the dishes arrived. Another good thing about Overseas is that they served the dishes pretty fast! I think we waited for barely 15 minutes when our dishes came one after another. It started with a plate of shiny, glazed BBQ pork or ‘char siew’ which we saw hanging at the kitchen counter. This was one of the better char siew that I’ve eaten, with the right combination of fatty and lean meat, and the right amount of glaze and crispy burnt edges! Should order this if you ever go to Overseas!

We also had the Braised chicken in claypot, where the chicken meat was boiled until tender and fall-off-the-bone texture. I know most of the older generations might love this due to its softness but I found this a little bit on the bland side. The taste of chicken was just very mild after hours of boiling.

The Stuffed Sea cucumber was something unique as I’ve never eaten sea cucumber cooked like this. I believe this was one of Overseas’ signature dishes too as I observed a few other tables ordering the same dish. The sea cucumber was boiled until very soft yet with a certain amount of firmness and the stuffing was a mixture of fish paste and vegetables. Such a chewy and healthy dish, perfect for all mothers!

With all the meat and seafood, there had to be a dish of vegetables too. We had a plate of mixed vege consisting of asparagus, lotus root, celery and carrot.

My favourite dish of the night was the Braised Pig Trotter! It was cooked with sour and spicy gravy, which was most appetizing! I also loved the ‘kai choy’ that went along with this dish. Correction, I think I loved the ‘kai choy’ more than the pork in this dish. *LOL* Went very well with rice and the gravy was just mouth-watering (literally).

Last but not least, we had the Steamed Patin (silver cat fish) with soya sauce. This was not bad, though not exemplary. The meat was not flaky, nor was it starchy. It was slightly above average. I guess I would always prefer salt water fish to the fresh water ones.

After the filling dinner, we had a cake-cutting ceremony with mother-in-law being the center of attention. We took a family photo together, and she looked so happy and glowing!

try the one at Jalan Imbi. I think that overseas restaurant is the best. and our family always take the “shun hock”. yes, fishes from the sea are still the best, but with fresh water fish, i think “shun hock” is one of the greatest. and overseas restaurant serves very nice ones. well… at least i like them.
