Castell serves the best ribs in town
*WARNING: Do not read with an empty stomach*
When Bok invited us all to dinner one day at Castell, I couldn’t help but ask, where is it? Situated in the heart of PJ in Section 16, this restaurant has actually been around for decades! *shame on me* Recently, it has been given a new look and a revamped menu by the owner, and we’re one of the lucky ones to be able to sample the new and existing dishes, set in the dim and romantic ambience that is Castell.

I absolutely adored what the owner has done to the place, with unpretentious furniture in a simple yet elegant setting. It made me feel right at home.

Before dinner started, we were served with some bread and glasses of Iced Lemon Tea to cool down our souls after a long day at work.

The dishes then started coming one after another, starting with the appetizers. One thing I must say though, is that Castell definitely takes pride in their food presentation! Regardless of appetizer, mains or desserts, each dish was arranged meticulously and beautifully to reflect the dish’s best potential.
The owner especially was very particular with presentation. Any extra drip of oil on the plate would set her running away to get a piece of tissue to wipe it off! No kidding.

Tomato & Basil Bruschetta – 4 Pieces (RM12.90)
The stuffed crab was something fusion, with piping hot, finely sliced crab meat painstakingly stuffed into the crab shell. Stick your fork beneath the breaded surface to reveal an abundance of delicious crab meat that is the perfect appetizer.

Crabmeat Seasoned & Stuffed Back in Its Shell (RM19.90)

Mushroom Cheese Bruschetta – 4 Pieces (RM12.90)
The grilled portobello mushroom as fragrant and juicy, not to mention huge. I didn’t expect to enjoy it because I’m not a fan of mushroom but I did!

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms – Three Varieties (Mixed Herbs, Tabasco and Garlic Butter) at (RM15.00)
The prawn cocktail was loaded with plenty of succulent prawns amidst special Castell dressing.

Prawn Cocktail – Prawns, Lettuce, Special Castell Dressing (RM12.00)

Plenty of prawns
Moving on to soups, the most memorable one that I had was the Jumbo prawn bisque. This was served with a really huge prawn cut into two halves, with thick and wholesome soup which would feed even the choosiest person. Very aromatic and rich in flavour indeed.

The mains followed right after that, and I was highly anticipating the US Prime rib, that the owner spoke so affectionately about. It’s apparently as big as the size of her arm. So upon presentation, I couldn’t help but to compare it to the size of MY arm. *LOL* It’s indeed HUGE! Possibly 2 times the size of my arm. And oh so fragrant! I could smell it even from the next table.

US Prime Rib (RM98.00)
The rib was then cut into small cubes to be shared, and each cube was a burst of flavours. It was cooked Medium Rare (MR) but it wasn’t bloody (thank God). The meat was oh-so-tender and juicy that I couldn’t stop myself from having more! Seriously, the best rib ever tasted. Ever.

Medium Rare (MR) Rib
The next steak smelled so much stronger than the rib, and only because of the blue cheese used. This is definitely an acquired taste and smell, because I still couldn’t stomach the smell myself. I probably need more practice! But Bok kept raving about how good this was, so I’m sure the cheese lovers would fall in love with the Stilton Special.

Stilton Special NZ/AUS – Grilled tenderloin wrapped around a blue cheese melt with beef bacon (RM68.00)
The prime fillet was my pick for the star dish (a close match with the Prime rib!) simply because it was grilled perfectly! Look at the interior of the meat! Grilled on the outside and rare on the inside, but with no sign of blood at all. Such a masterpiece! Most importantly, the meat was tender and wasn’t gamey at all, with the juices sipping into the meat at all the right places. Bravo to the chef.

Prime Fillet NZ/AUS – Thick, juicy tenderloin fillet with an amazing sherry sauce (RM68.00)
If you’re not a beef-eater, fret not! For there are plenty of other choices to be chosen from.

Grilled Lamb Cutlets (RM38.00)
The grilled kurau was pretty unique since not many restaurants choose this fish to be served. It’s always either Salmon or Dory! This local fish was fresh and with flaky and smooth meat. A good source of protein too!

Grilled Kurau (RM55.00)
The Chicken Parmigiana is of my personal favourite. The chicken was deep fried til crispy and crunchy outside, with cheese and bacon on top. Bite them all at once and you’ll find yourself nodding in satisfaction. I’d definitely order this again in my next visit.

Chicken Parmigiana – Crumbed chicken breast served with chips at (RM30.00)
The mixed grill is a famous choice for the youngsters, because of its value for money! Priced almost the same with the grilled lamb cutlets, the mixed grill offers so much more including prawns, sausage, spring chicken and lamb. And oh my, I totally fell in love with those potato wedges! They’re amazing! Crispy outside and fluffy inside. I think I practically bagged most of the wedges on the plate. *LOL*

Mixed Grill – Lamb, Chicken, Sausages, Prawns (RM39.00)
For those who are not into such heavy meaty variety, the pasta options are aplenty at Castell too.

Creamy Chicken Pesto Linguine – Grilled chicken, cream, fresh basil, pine nuts, olive oil at (RM24.90)
I enjoyed the aglio olio spaghetti with prawns because it was pretty light and appetizing with a tinge of spiciness.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Grilled Jumbo Tiger Prawns at (RM27.90)
Halfway through the meal, someone requested for beer to go with the awesome steaks! *LOL* We were kindly served with their premium Paulaner beer, which was very smooth and easy to drink. It was my first time drinking this German beer, and I loved it!

Paulaner Beer (RM24)

witch with Paulaner
Last but not least, desserts! The coffee hot fudge cake is not in the menu, so make sure you ask the waitress for this dessert’s availability when you order. Very rich and decadent coffee-flavoured cake with a scoop of ice-cream – heavenly.

Coffee Hot Fudge Cake (RM12.90)
My favourite dessert would be the chocolate chip hazelnut friands, which is a special recipe brought all the way from down under by the owner. The friand was very similar to muffin and was filled with half-melted chocolate chip inside. Bliss! You simply have to eat it with a spoon of ice-cream to discover its full potential.

Choc Chip Hazelnut Friands at (RM8.90)

Apple Almond Crumble at (RM12.00)
The Tiramisu was infused with Baileys but make sure you dig deep inside to the spongy goodness to taste the tinge of Baileys.

Tiramisu – a traditional mascarpone cheese, baileys infused (RM14.00)

Beers and snacks
We thought the meal was over but Sunny surprised us with a cake! It was his specialty chocolate moist cake that I so love! Yum!

I love kurau I tell you. Back in those days, there was this cafe in Ipoh named Rendezvous that served the best grilled kurau with a tangy/spicy tomato-based sauce.
Til now, you can’t find kurau in most menu, seriously.

Oh I remember Rendezvous, I ate there before when I was young too! Too bad it’s already closed down. The kurau is good here!
