Warm up your tummy at Hon Kee Porridge, Damansara Uptown

When rainy days come, I would usually hunt for that bowl of steaming hot porridge to warm up my tummy. The smooth texture and the steaming hot broth does wonders in warming up a person’s body and soul. Hence, Hon Kee Porridge is not to be missed when one is searching for some warmth.

Located at Damansara Uptown, this restaurant is situated just behind the Starbucks coffee there. But be warned, there are actually TWO Starbucks outlet at Uptown, and I was actually misled to the wrong one, causing the whole bunch to wait for me. *apologetic* Worry not, I will provide the complete address at the end of the post. Upon entering the shop, I couldn’t help but notice the myriad of fried Chinese pastries in front, simply attracting my attention away.

Hon Kee Porridge, established since 1949, has a signature dish of raw fish to go with the porridge. Some might like the fish raw, some semi-cooked and some well-cooked. If you prefer yours to be well-cooked, just remember to dunk those raw fish pieces in the porridge as soon as they’re served, so that the steaming heat would be hot enough to cook the fish completely. The fish served to us was so fresh it was translucent!

We tried a variety of porridge that night, starting with the Pork Meatballs Porridge. The smooth and delicious porridge was accompanied by 5 huge and meaty pork balls. Every slurp of hot porridge was a delight to the empty stomach! :)

The Pork Innards porridge was a hit with the rest of the gang, especially the fried intestines. It was my first time eating fried intestines, and I have to say, I took some time to get used to it. But after a few bites, I was sold!

My favourite of the lot, also crowned as the Star Dish of the day, was the Century Egg and Minced Pork porridge! The century egg was huge and aplenty! I just loved them to bits! Coupled with the savoury minced pork, the whole combination was just to-die-for. I could finish this whole bowl by myself, and more!

My love~

Shredded Chicken porridge was a little to the bland side, perfect for those who look for something plain and simple to eat.

Teng Chai porridge was fragrant with the groundnut boiled til soft and yummy.

The variety of porridge

Of course, all the porridge wouldn’t feel complete without the Chinese crullers – my favourite! Every time Saucer and I have porridge, I would never fail to order Chinese crullers. Never. He would know. :P Fortunately, the crullers at Hon Kee were fat and crispy, just the way I love it!

Other than their signature porridge, Hon Kee also serves some other side dishes and soups. The lotus root soup totally had me in awe for never had I tasted soup as wholesome and flavourful as this. One could almost feel effort and the hours that were used to boil the soup until it reached perfection.

Saucer enjoyed the Nasi Lemak very much, especially together with the chicken rendang.

One of the side dishes worth mentioning was called ‘Tan San’. Yes you heard it right. Tan San in Cantonese, which also means something else. It definitely had me laughing when I heard the boss telling us the name! It surprisingly tasted very much like Sat Kei Ma, sweet and a little crunchy.

Another side dish I totally loved was the prawn fritters, fried til golden brown and with extremely crispy edges.

The final dish of ma lai kou ended the meal with a sweet and homely feel. I left the place telling myself I definitely had to return again, only for the century egg porridge and Chinese crullers. Bliss!

Ha! So now I know you love oily sticks! (This funny term coming from Tekkaus!)

But some people say it’s unhealthy – it’s not just the oil but the ingredients used to make it – so even if it’s your favourite food, my advice is to eat it sparingly once in a while : )

How do they get their porridge to be so smooth, any idea? Do they grind the rice before cooking…or do they blend the porridge? Or do they only serve the gruel?
    .-= suituapui´s last blog ..Faithfully… =-.

    • iamthewitch says:

This is a trade secret! LOL! I have no idea how they make it so smooth! Perhaps they boil it for hours until the rice becomes soft and smooth :)
