Restaurant Tien Kee Soup & Porridge – A Teochew and Hakka Heritage

Very often Saucer tells me, “Let’s have porridge for dinner” and I’ll go “Where?”. And so the loop remains for we haven’t actually found the ‘perfect’ porridge place yet. That is, until Ken introduced us to Tien Kee Soup and Porridge restaurant, thankfully located just 15 minutes away at SS14.

Upon entering the shop, I noticed an impressive spread of newspaper coverage on Tien Kee, framed proudly on the hall of fame. :)

Before the main porridge dishes were served, we had lots of special Hakka and Teochew dishes, brought down ever since 20 years ago from Johor. It was also my first time having a dish called Hakka Abacus, which sounded so cute! It was actually a dish of button-shaped yam balls, which were firm and chewy.

When I had a taste of the Black vinegar trotter, it instantly reminded me of my grandma, who cooked up a splendid vinegar trotter or ‘chu kiok chou’. Definitely a taste of home, and a very good one, too.

Soon Kueh was a Teochew specialty that was new to me. It was full of ingredients such as dried shrimps, bamboo shoots, fungus, and minced meat. Very delicious and healthy!

Stewed pork with yam was cooked to perfection, with the yam so smooth and soft it almost melted in my mouth. The pork was also well-marinated and very fragrant with the essence of yam absorbed within. I know my grandpa would definitely love this dish!

I enjoyed the Pomfret Mee Suah a lot, especially when it’s steaming hot. The noodles were smooth and slurpee-licious! And the best part was of course the soup! Full of pomfret goodness that was healthy without compromising on taste. The fish used was also fresh and smooth.

Ah, the bowl of porridge I was waiting for soon arrived! It was Pomfret porridge, cooked Teochew style! In case you don’t already know, Teochew style porridge is very much similar to rice mixed with soup. The key to a satisfying bowl of Teochew porridge lies again in the soup. Without a doubt, Tien Kee knows how to boil its soup for each spoonful was rich with the goodness of seafood, making this bowl a hot favourite among us.

Last but not least, the Lobak was one of the latest addition to the menu. Skin was crispy and golden brown, with plenty of stuffing inside.

For the perfect fix of porridge and soup, I would definitely head over to Tien Kee  for a dose of home-cooked goodness!

    I was about to comment on the limegreen table cloth, but then thought better of it. It provided a good contrast to the bowls of goodness huh?

      LOL! Didn’t really pay attention to the table cloth until you mentioned it. But I guess who cares about table cloths when you have great food eh? :)

    Hi.. just a stranger looking for some more interesting eateries in SJ and really thks to you guys for this recommendation. will definitely try this place out..

    However, wd like to make a correction, though (sorry!!). Soon Kueh is actually a TeoChew delicacy.. and one that i’ve looking out for for years.. hope u don’t mind my KPC here.. (i’m a pretty “proud” teochew..)
