2-in-1 buffet at Hotel Nikko KL
Have you ever faced with a situation where you and your partner/friend crave to eat different things at the same time such that you can’t come to an agreeable decision? Saucer and I were debating just the other day as he was looking for sashimi and I was craving for roasted duck! In the end, we found just the perfect place for us – Hotel Nikko, which is currently offering a sumptuous 2-in-1 buffet with Japanese and Chinese cuisine is the answer to our calling.
*Update: Hotel Nikko has since been taken over by Hotel InterContinental

Hotel Nikko 2-in-1 buffet menu
Hotel Nikko’s buffet takes place at 2 restaurants, which means we can sit at either Benkay Japanese restaurant or Toh Lee Chinese restaurant. Did you know that Benkay Japanese Restaurant was named after a historic Japanese warrior who was strong, courageous and loyal during the war period in Japan? It is also a well-known name for Japanese Restaurants in Japan offering traditional and excellent quality of authentic Japanese food, which represents Hotel Nikko’s mission precisely .

Dining area of Benkay restaurant
Its entrance gives a warm welcome reception area, and I couldn’t help but notice the Sake chiller on the right side, allowing diners the opportunity to select choices of Japanese alcoholic beverages and house pouring wine.

Sake chiller
Walking inside the dining area, I observed a beautiful landscaped garden and waterfall, giving diners like us a serene feeling while enjoying authentic Japanese cuisine.

Symbol of Hotel Nikko
Without further ado, Saucer and I took our seats at Benkay and walked around the buffet spread to capture the multitude of dishes offered.
Appetizers

Salad bar

Lotus chips

Edamame
Assorted Sashimi
When Saucer saw the sashimi area, I could almost hear his squeal of excitement!
The slices of raw fish were prepared right in front of our very eyes and they were all so fresh! Upon checking with the chef, we found out that 90% of the seafood at Benkay are imported twice weekly from Japan! Oh my! Any fresher, you’ll have to catch the salmon yourself! *LOL*

Salmon

Butter fish

Yellowtail

Tuna
Even I couldn’t help from having a few pieces of sashimi myself for they looked too tempting.

My first plate!
Assorted Sushi
The variety of sushi was so huge, you will definitely be spoiled for choice.

Squid, surf clam, scallop and tuna sushi

Salmon, yellowtail and butter fish sushi
Sushi Roll
For sushi rolls, my all-time favourite is definitely soft-shelled crab so I laughed excitedly when I saw such a big tray of that on the sushi bar!

Soft shell crab, California roll and prawn tempura rolls

Unagi, Jumbo and tuna mayonnaise roll
Seafood on Ice
In between Benkay and Toh Lee restaurants, there was a huge spread of seafood on ice, complete with an ice sculpture. Such a beautiful and inviting sculpture of a fish.

Ice sculpture

Chucked oyster, poached tiger prawn and mussels

Tabasco for seasoning
Teppanyaki
Deep inside Benkay restaurant, there lies the Teppanyaki room complete with a full-fledged Teppanyaki counter. Check out the thick slices of beef and the large amount of fresh prawns,at your service.

Beef teppanyaki

Prawn teppanyaki
Pick any amount of beef or prawns or seafood that you want and pass them to the Teppanyaki chef.

Teppanyaki boat

Teppanyaki counter
Tempura
That’s not all, just next to the Teppanyaki counter is the Tempura counter! Ooh, fried prawns here I come!

Vegetables tempura

Prawn tempura
Noodles
For something more filling (as if the buffet spread is not filling enough!), one can opt for Japanese noodles at the noodle station. There is a choice of either Udon or Soba, with your own choice of condiments.

Soba

Udon

Condiments
If you don’t fancy Japanese noodles, there’s also Chinese La Mein, served with six different sauces to your liking. If you’re adventurous, you can even mix and match the sauces!

Claypots of sauces kept warm

Carving Station
The carving station caught my attention even from afar because the sight of the brilliantly golden Peking duck was simply too hard to miss! I was eyeing the duck right from the beginning, telling myself that I simply must have it! And I did! 4 servings some more! They were really GOOD! As good as the ones I had in Beijing, if not better.

Peking duck
The skin was crispy with a thin layer of juicy fat, and the meat was well-marinated and flavourful. Combine that with the pancake and sauce, it was a downer! Saucer and I took turns to line up for the Peking duck because they were really good! Make sure you queue early because the duck was a huge hit.
A la Carte Japanese
Guess what? Other than the buffet spread at the restaurant, one can opt to order a la carte as well, from a menu of over 75 choices! *gasp* (Check out menu at the end of the blog post)

Mini sukiyaki

Grilled Cod with teriyaki sauce

Grilled eel with kabayaki sauce

Steamed egg custard (Chawan mushi)
A la carte Chinese
For Chinese, check out the double-boiled black chicken soup. Healthy and delicious!

Lily bulb tempura

Roasted duck Hong Kong style
Desserts
Finally, desserts time! As usual, you could opt for the desserts on the buffet spread, or you can choose to order a la carte.

Egg tarts

Lotus paste pie
Of course, the meal is not complete without having Macha, the green tea ice cream. This special home made green tea ice cream has a smooth texture and carefully blended taste that gives a delightful finishing to a gastronomic meal.

Green tea and black sesame ice-cream, and Double Boiled Sea Coconut with Dried Longan
The Chefs
All these would not have been possible if not for the people behind the scenes! And by that I meant the chefs with their toques!

Executive Japanese Chef Tetsuya Yanagida

Chinese Head Chef Chan Chong Yan
Saucer and I ate until we couldn’t eat anymore that night. Completely full and satiated. If you’re interested in the menu of the over 75 items in the buffet and a la carte orders, feel free to click on the figure below to view the complete list.
