My Honeymoon at Maldives – Part 4
Finally, the last installment of my Maldives escapade! Are you people getting tired of it already? *LOL* It seems like no one managed to guess the activity that I asked about in my last post. It was actually Night Fishing! It was actually Saucer’s idea, because he loves fishing! As for me, it’s my first time! Plus, I don’t fancy holding wriggly wet stuff. Lucky for me, there were a few guides following us, and there was this guy who was pretty helpful. The cost for night fishing was USD35+ per person, but whatever you catch would be cooked for you for free! The 8 of us in a group took a boat out to the deep sea, and started letting our lines down. The guide helped me during the first 15 minutes or so, but he had no luck! Our baits kept missing in the sea with no fish.
Then, I told him I wanted to try it on my own. And guess what? I got my first fish!!! I was happy beyond description! *LOL* This was my first fish, held by the guide!

My first catch

witch with her first fish
I am not sure what fish it was, but those guides on boat kept saying it’s one of the tastiest fish you can catch. Needless to say, I was proud of myself.
With that first catch, my interest in fishing began to grow, and I quickly asked for a new bait. And wonder of all wonders, I got another fish in less than 10 minutes! And a very heavy one too! Can you believe it? But sad to say, once we saw the fish, it was apparently one of the endangered species and we’re not allowed to catch it. So we had to let it go. The whole process happened so fast that I didn’t have the chance to capture a picture of the fish! It looked exactly like this picture below and it’s called Butterfly fish.

Butterfly fish
Spirits still high, I requested for yet another bait. This time, I waited patiently and somehow, luck was really on my side because in less than 5 minutes, I felt a tug on my line! Is this beginner’s luck or what? I quickly pulled up the string halfway, and asked Saucer to pull up the remaining string so that I could go get the camera.
And yes, it was indeed a fish! Albeit a small one.
Man, you cannot understand how proud I was that night. *LOL* Out of the 8 tourists who went for the fishing trip, only 1 other man caught 1 fish. The rest didn’t catch any. The tour guides helped us catch about 3-4 other fishes, including one gigantic one.

My 3rd fish
Soon, it was time to go back to the resort. We all went back happily knowing that we would have plenty of fish for dinner! Poor Saucer was disappointed that he didn’t catch any fish.
Look at how big this fish was! Caught by one of the guides! It was extremely heavy ok! I could only hold it for a mere few seconds before placing it back on the plate. I think the fish must have weighed at least 5-6 kg.

witch with giant fish
The 8 of us agreed to share a table for dinner so that we could all share the big fish. We chose 2 other fish on the side, one of which was my catch.
There were some more fish but we thought we wouldn’t be able to finish them all, so we only had 3.

Our dinner
We were asked to come back an hour later, for the kitchen to cook our fish. We took the time to get to know the other 6 tourists in our group, who turned out to be all Hongkies! Perfect! No communication barrier at least.
They were there on an annual company trip and the lady boss Mrs Loh was extremely kind and friendly. She even treated us to beer and drinks while waiting for our table.

Grilled giant fish
The grilled giant fish was so big that even 8 of us couldn’t finish it! Big as it was, the meat was not as tender and smooth as one would like. I guess perhaps the bigger the fish is, the harder and more gamey the meat becomes. Still, it was a great experience for me. The other 2 smaller fish were steamed with soy sauce, and they tasted wonderful. In fact, Mrs Loh was saying that we should have chosen more of the smaller fish instead of this one big fish. But all of us knew it deep inside our hearts that we’re all curious to try out the big fish, no matter what.

Steamed red snapper
It was a great night out with the Hongkies, all of them friendly and chatty. Of course, the beer helped too! *LOL* Only upon chatting with them that we found out we’re actually on the same flight to and from Maldives! What a coincidence!

Us with the Hongkies at Maldives
After dinner, we started exchanging contacts and facebook IDs to keep in touch. And the waiter chirped that he has a facebook ID too! *LOL*

Unfinished fish
The next day marked the final day of our stay at Maldives. We only had to leave for the airport at 7pm, but our room was returned at 12pm. So with 7 hours to kill, we decided to join for another activity, this time, the Sunset Cruise (USD50+/pax). This was by far the most expensive activity that we joined here, but it was oh-so-worth-it! We left the jetty at 4pm and headed out towards the ocean.

Once the boat reached a certain location, it slowed down and the guides let go of a red net. The net was held on one end by the pole attached to the boat, and was let loose on the other end. And we’re supposed to climb onto the net and lie down on it! At first glance, it sure did look scary, especially when the other end of the net was loose. It meant that one could easily lose hold of the grip and be floating on the big big ocean.

Red net on the ocean
The guide kept convincing me that there’s nothing to be worried about. So I gingerly placed my foot onto the netting and climbed my way down the net.

In the meantime, Saucer was more adventurous and joined the guide at the back of the boat, hanging onto the rope behind.

Saucer at the back of the boat
He joined me later on, and with the boat gliding slowly on the ocean, the experience was not at all bad. It was fantastic!

Saucer and witch on the net
It was like sleeping on the ocean, except that you’re on the move. Waters would splash to our face occasionally, but it was glorious. Next to us was the sun going down in the evening.

Us having a blast

Aww..
And the best part was, we had people serving us drinks! We didn’t even have to move, and we’re served beers first and white wine later on. It was simply awesome to be pampered like this.

Cheers!
Later on, it was time to head back to the resort. We climbed back up the boat and watched the sun go down. Of course, a certain amount of camwhoring ensued.

Doing the somewhat Titanic post
The sun started to set as we’re on our very slow cruise back. It was an amazing sight to watch.

Before we knew it, we reached the resort at about 6+pm. Going for the cruise made us leave Maldives with no regrets indeed. Such an amazing gem in the Indian Ocean. Sadly, it was time to go back home to the real world.

Our boat came precisely as arranged, and 1 hour later, we’re at the airport, waiting for our flight back to KL.

witch at the airport restaurant
No doubt we left with heavy hearts and aching skin (!), but we felt happy and satiated knowing that we had visited one of the most gorgeous place in the world. Truly recommended. But again, sunblock lotion is a must! Look at Saucer’s skin a few days later! *ouch*

Gross!
Maldives is truly a beautiful place. And as some of you have pointed out, it may not be visible anymore in the future. So take the opportunity to visit it while you can! It’s amazing and totally worth it!

Goodbye Maldives!

I like the activities that you went to.
Personally not into fishing, I find it hard to see the fishy struggling. But I’m a little hypocritical, I still eat fish! I just don’t wnat to feel guilty for catching them, haha.
The net at the end of the boat looks like fun. It’s an open lounge in the sea.
These are the priceless and happy memories that will make you smile many years down the road.

What is the name of that two nice fish ‘caught’ in the net weighing more than 50kg each? haha. Reminds me of kissing molly,(kind of pet fish who often kiss each other in the fish tank). Oh oh poor back kena burnt. Thanks for the full package tour of Maldives. Cheers.
