Mei Chixuan Chinese New Year Specials
If Prince Hotel’s menu was too pricey for you, do consider a much more reasonable menu from Mei Chixuan in Kota Damansara. Thanks to Sidney, I had the chance to sample some of the Chinese New Year special dishes specially prepared by the chef of Mei Chixuan.

Sea Cucumber with Seafood and Mushroom on a Dragon Boat
First dish was the Sea Cucumber with Seafood and Mushroom on a Dragon Boat. What a mouthful! When the dish was served, the presentation itself was already attracting oohs and aahs from all of us. It was so grand and elegant, that it was almost too nice to be eaten! The sea cucumber here was cooked in the most traditional manner, by soaking it in water for a good 4 days, with no addition of chemical whatsoever. So you can be rest assured that whatever that goes into this dish is healthy and original. The prawns were not huge but succulent, and the gravy was flavourful and blended perfectly with the sea cucumber. According to the chef, the main ingredient to flavour the sea cucumber was the squid. The aromatic squid lets the sea cucumber absorb its fragrance, hence lending it a very delicious taste which is far from being artificial.

The second dish didn’t fail to attract us either. It was Braised pork trotter with mushroom and lotus seed. At first sight, it looked almost like a fish from top. Very pretty! The pork meat was marinated well and tender, and the gravy was done just right to envelope the pork. The lotus root was a popular hit among us when we all commented that it was cooked until soft and flavourful.

Last but not least, the Brown rice with waxed meat and egg yolk, or ‘lap mei fan’ was done uniquely by its addition of brown rice! It was my first time eating ‘lap mei fan’ with brown rice, a healthy touch! Eating the rice alone might prove to be slightly dry and bland, but when it’s eaten together with the waxed meat, it brought out a whole new dimension to the rice! One simply must eat the rice with the waxed meat or one won’t bring out the best of this rice.

Buried right in the middle of the rice was also a huge egg yolk, almost like finding gold in the midst of digging, eh?

Can you spot the egg yolk?

Chinese New Year dishes from Mei Chixuan
Some of the dishes, especially the sea cucumber requires advanced preparation time so it would be wise to call up and reserve beforehand.
