3 meals in Penang
This is backdated post, when I went to Penang with Saucer and spent a weekend there. We met with our good friend Wailian, who offered us a place to stay and transportation to the makan places!
Meal #1
The first night we were there, he brought us to Khun Tai, a famous restaurant which is no stranger to the locals up north.

Khun Tai Restaurant
Getting there was a bit tricky because it required crossing the Penang bridge over to the mainland. And anywhere past that bridge, I am a total noob. *LOL* Anyway, we reached there in about 30 minutes, I suppose, and were greeted with al-fresco dining concept with lots of bright lights and wooden tables and chairs inside mini booths! So very cute.

For drinks, we ordered the refreshing sugar cane juice, which we couldn’t get enough of! It was sweet (naturally) and refreshing.

The belacan fried rice was fiery! I said that because there were bits of cili padi (bird’s eye chilli) hidden within the rice. Of course, you’re supposed to mix everything up including the chicken slices, cucumber, mango and egg with the rice. So the chilli will just be hidden within the rice, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a bite of how fiery the rice is, like Wailian. *LOL* Just make sure you have your drinks nearby.

The steamed lala and squid was the best dish of the night! The gravy was sour and spicy without overpowering your senses. The mixture of flavour was just right, with enough kick! It’s definitely a love-hate relationship with the gravy, you love it because it’s so good, but you hate it because it’s too spicy. Ah, but we still couldn’t get enough of it! Oh, I must also mention that the squid and lala here were top-notch! Very fresh and succulent. Thumbs-up!

Look at Saucer perspiring like there’s no tomorrow. *LOL* But he still continued drinking the gravy.

Sweating Saucer
For something lighter, we had the fried kangkung, which was a little oily as expected. They were crispy and crunchy, perfect as snacks.

How could we forget pandan chicken in a Thai restaurant? These were not too bad, though I’ve tasted better ones. I thought the chicken inside was not as crispy as I would have liked it to be. But taste wise was above average.

Meal #2
So that marked our dinner on the first night. The second day, we had to wake up (pitifully) as early as 7am! *horrified*All in the name of Super Hokkien Mee, literally. Wailian brought us to this place near Swatow lane, to eat this Hokkien Mee which is very famous and is sold out by 8.30am on weekends. Fine, for good food, I’d sacrifice my beauty sleep. *LOL*

Hokkien Mee
Fortunately, the sacrifice was worthwhile. We managed to get our bowls of hokkien mee before they’re sold out and those noodles turned out to be delicious! The soup was thick and frothy with a strong aroma of prawn. And there were pieces of real prawns inside, as opposed to dried shrimps that some restaurants pass off as prawns. I was happy with this find, and would have dragged myself out of bed for this anytime.

Delicious hokkien mee
See, when I said it’s Super Hokkien mee, it really IS super! *LOL*

Look out for the stall at One Corner Cafe. But do go early to avoid disappointment!

Meal #3
For lunch, we proceeded to the relatively new (at that time) joint called I Mum Mum pan mee restaurant in Georgetown. This place is located on your left, if you’re coming from Georgetown, heading toward the coastal highway (to bridge). Located at the ground floor of some residential flats, the location might not be a strong selling point for this restaurant.
I ordered my favourite chilli/spicy pan mee, which is a dried version of pan mee with chilli flakes, minced meat and a half-boiled egg on top. To savour this, you’re supposed to mix everything up and eat it! After mixing, I found my noodles to be a tad too soggy, due to the egg yolk, perhaps? Or maybe they shouldn’t have cooked my noodles too well so that it won’t be soggy after mixing up? Anyway, that aside, the taste was pretty good. Minced meat was well-marinated, and the chili was not too strong or mild.

Spicy pan mee
Saucer had the dried pan mee, which he thought was not bad, above average. To him, Cha Cha Pan Mee is still the best. We told Wailian that he should come to KL to try Cha Cha pan mee first before declaring that I Mum Mum is the best. *LOL*

Thanks again to Wailian for taking the trouble to bring us around and waking us up at the ungodly hours. *LOL* I’ll definitely return to Penang again for another round of good food!
