Teppanyaki’s Fuji Snow

It was 2 weeks ago when Saucer and I went to Pavilion KL at night, just to catch the snow fall happening at 8pm. We reached only at 8.20pm, due to the massive jam outside of Pavilion, not to mention the amount of human INSIDE Pavilion too. Anyway, after that we went to search for dinner at 9+pm, at the LG food court. Saucer had this craving for Teppanyaki and guess what? It was all sold out! *gasp* My first time encounter, indeed. Luckily for us, Richard and Edward invited us for Teppanyaki the next day, at least to satisfy our cravings.

The thing about most teppanyaki restaurants in Malaysia is that we can actually see our food being prepared. If you ask me, there’s good and bad. Good in the sense that you can see what goes into your food, and you could probably learn a a cooking skill or two. Bad is if the ventilation is poor, then you feel yourself getting smoke all over your hair and face, and you smell like food too! *LOL* Thank goodness the ventilation and suction at Teppanyaki were pretty solid. I could literally see smoke being sucked up the hood. So, no worries on getting too smelly.

And then, the chef started work! Among all of us, we ordered some sets of Grilled Salmon, Grilled Chicken, Grilled Prawn and Grilled Beef! The skillful chef worked them all out in no time. Look at how golden brown the salmon slices turned to!

Later on, he added slabs of beef on the grill and cut them into cubes. I could smell my beef already! :P

In the midst of cooking, he also added some spices and seasonings to the meat. Look at this picture! I managed to capture the seasoning in mid-air! *LOL*

Another few more minutes and they’re done! Seriously, watching your food being cooked is quite interesting.

This is my beef teppanyaki, complete with a portion of vegetables as well. For those under carb-watch, I saw someone opting to change the rice to vegetables as well, which means you’d get two portions of vege and no rice. Pretty healthy option, I would say.

Beef Teppanyaki (RM11.50)

I thought my beef was cooked a tad too well. It would have been more tender and juicy if it was slightly raw in the middle. But the seasoning and marinade were well in place. It was not overly oily too, which was good.

Salmon Fish Teppanyaki (RM15.50)

I tried some of the salmon teppanyaki too and was impressed! The fish was surprisingly fresh and flaky. It was also well-marinated, though it had a strong peppery taste. You could ask for less pepper if that’s your preference. The portion was also pretty huge, considering the price. Not bad!

We also ordered some California rolls as side dish, but judging from the look of it, I guess one can tell that it’s nothing to shout about.

Gyoza (RM3.90/5 pcs)

The preparation of Gyoza was really something. I watched as they turned from flat white slabs into puffy, golden brown delicacies. They were very crispy but beware if you try to eat it off the grill pan. The filling inside would burn your tongue if you’re not careful! *LOL*

Finally, the star of the day, in my opinion, was Fuji Snow! You must be thinking I’m crazy, to say that Fuji Snow is the star in a Teppanyaki restaurant, but I’m not! Everyone who ordered this was giving thumbs-up. This was the perfect ending to our meal, a cool and refreshing twist after the fiery hot-off-the-pan teppanyaki. They used the authentic gula melaka (palm sugar) instead of the ‘sarsi’ or red-coloured crap that people put on their shaved ice. Add to that some coconut milk, red bean, cendol, grass jelly, etc etc and it’s bliss! Not to mention the very finely shaved ice that just melts in your mouth.

Fuji Snow (RM3.50)

This dish definitely deserves its name as one of Teppanyaki’s Signature dish. I would definitely go back there again just for the Fuji Snow.

    hmmmm, i actually don’t really enjoy eating in Teppanyaki.. despite the standard drops, it’s all the grease and smoke that makes me feel so uncomfortable.. i prefer the japanese restaurants that does the cooking in their closed kitchen.. :)

      Eh, I do respond to comments… But usually a bit slow, coz ah… procrastination? So sorry ya! But I guess Bkt Bintang area I can’t say I’m too familiar with it.. so can’t make a good recommendation. Hmm..
