Mooncakes from Prince Hotel
Mooncake festival is coming soon, and many restaurants are busy promoting their own lines of mooncakes. From the traditional lotus paste filling, restaurants have creatively come up with many varieties of fillings including red bean, green tea, nuts and many more. Prince Hotel, as with the previous years, also came up with their own version of mooncakes. Thanks to Shirley, I had the privilege to taste the glorious mooncakes at the prestigious hotel.
Of all the mooncakes, the one that deserves special mention would be the Rum and Raisin mooncake (RM22/pc), consisting of 5 varieties of nuts. I personally do not fancy nutty mooncake but I developed a liking towards Prince’s Rum and Raisin because it wasn’t overly sweet. Also, the combination of so many types of nuts gave out a fragrant nutty aroma that was pretty addictive to the palate.

The Strawberry Custard with Aloe Vera (RM11/pc) was something new to me. I had never eaten strawberry-flavoured mooncakes before, and have you ever thought of aloe vera being in a mooncake? Absolutely creative. Bravo to the creator of this flavour. The Mango Cheesecake (RM12/pc) flavour was a tad too sweet for my liking, though the cheese was soft and smooth.
Moving on to the more traditional flavours, I liked the Low Sugar Hong Kong White Lotus Paste (RM19/pc) variant the most. Thank goodness for this, now even the health-conscious can enjoy mooncakes without feeling guilty.
There was also the special Chrysanthemum Lotus Paste with Chinese Wolfberries mooncake (RM21/pc) which was not only yummy to your tongue, but good for your eyes too. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone eh?
The Red Bean with Green Tea paste (RM20/pc) was a combination of sweet and slightly bitter, which did well to counteract each other.
Last but not least, the Hong Kong White Lotus Paste and Single Egg Yolk (RM21/pc) would be the most traditional flavour, perfect for those from the older generations. Seriously, I’m pretty sure my grandparents would never understand the mooncake gimmicks which they deemed to take away the originality of mooncakes. Generation gap, I suppose.

At the end of the tasting session, we were also given a plate of ‘Kuai lin ko’ or Herbal Jelly to neutralize the sweet taste from our tongues. The Herbal Jelly was very aromatic and full of herbal flavour. In fact, I felt really healthy after eating the herbs-packed jelly. *LOL*

‘Kuai Lin Ko’ a.k.a. Herbal Jelly

Oh yes, VERY shiny and smooth!!
Those are normal size mooncakes or mini mooncakes? I think a mini mooncake selling at more than RM12 per piece is terribly overpriced!
I love herbal jelly! Ate a lot of those in China! But I still prefer the ones sold by Koong Woh Tong! : )

Indeed, they’re mini mooncakes. I guess 5-star hotel really has 5-star prices too.
