Fabulous Crabs at Taste Good, Puchong
Thanks to Ken for organizing this, a few of us had the chance to sample some wonderful dishes from this hidden gem in Puchong. I say it’s hidden because there are simply too many Chinese restaurants or ANY restaurants, for that matter, in Puchong itself! It will be hard to decide which to go to! Taste Good restaurant is one of the many situated in Bandar Puteri Puchong, across the road from Bumbu Bali. Beware though, there is another nearby restaurant called Good Taste, that almost confused me. Look for this signboard in red colour to avoid confusion.

The interior of the restaurant was clean and simple with the traditional red clothed tables favoured by Chinese.

Before the food was served, I camwhored with Rachel, my new-found friend from www.placesandfoods.com. I found that both of us could click and I really enjoyed chatting with her. I hope the feeling is mutual though. *LOL*

Rachel and witch
The restaurant manager, also the sister to the owner, was Ms Ong. She was one kind and chatty lady who shared with us her experience in managing the restaurant and in fending off ‘officers’ in disguise to collect ‘protection money’. It was really interesting.

Ms Ong
The first dish that was served: Stir fry Dried & Fresh cuttle fish with Onions and Peas (RM15). I simple loved the cuttle fish addition on top of the dish. It gave the dish a distinctive aroma, and the salty taste just complemented the otherwise plain vegetables.

Next, we had the Steamed Mandarin Fish in Rice Wine (RM23) in the huge claypot which was still piping hot when served. Needless to say, the fish was flaky fresh, and the slight wine taste gave it an interesting twist. This was apparently one of the popular orders and I wouldn’t ask why.

Moving on, we had pork ribs, my favourite! However, this type, they’re cooked with bitter gourd (not so much of my favourite). My dad would have loved this.

Next, there was a plate of golden-coloured beancurd, also known as Beancurd in Pumpkin sauce (RM2/person). It was my first time eating beancurd cooked this way, and I must say, it’s refreshingly good. The pumpkin on its own was already delicious and healthy; pairing it up with the beancurd only made the dish more heavenly. Also, don’t forget the very pretty golden colour that it exuded.

When the next dish was served, I wish my grandfather was there! He LOVED fatty pork with layers! Unhealthy, no doubt, but definitely yummy! Look at the super shiny skin! According to Ms Lim, this dish was similar to ‘Dong Po’ meat, just that it comes with the bones as well, while the former doesn’t.

Braised 3-ply Pork Belly
Sweet and Sour Crispy Chicken was served next, which was something closer to home for me. I practically grew up with sweet and sour chicken back in my hometown. It was almost a weekly affair for our family to eat this, so I totally connected with this dish. The addition of cuttlefish on top yet again, brought out a strong aroma which only made the dish taste better.

Another of their signature dishes was the Clams in Superior Soup (RM12/RM24). The soup had a strong wine taste, perhaps to cover the fishy/earthy smell that most clams would have. The meat was soft and fresh, but I especially loved the aromatic soup.

Finally, the moment we were looking forward to arrived. The dish of Butter and Pumpkin Crabs (RM38/kg) was the star of the day! Everyone of us had never eaten/cooked crabs this way, so we were all pretty reserved at first. But after the first taste of the gravy, music started playing (ala Ratatouille style) and all of us started scooping up the crabs. I must admit this is the strongest selling point for Taste Good Restaurant. Unique and delicious. For those who are afraid of the strong taste of butter, worry not, as the taste of butter was almost insignificant. I was most worried of the butter taste at first too, but it was barely there. The pumpkin was more overpowering instead.

Last but not least, we had the Kam Heong crabs (RM35). These were the more common crabs usually found in most restaurants. Spicy and fragrant due to the dried shrimps and curry leaves used. Most importantly, the crabs were huge and fresh and meaty. Yum!

At this point, Sidney from BigBoysOven suddenly took out a bottle of red wine. He said it was to celebrate the return of Christine and Chris from the UK! It was also my first time meeting the both of them, and they’re very sweet! Welcome back!

Sidney and red wine
Funnily, we had our red wine Chinese style! Using tea cups instead of wine glasses, it was definitely something to all of us. And hilarious too! Literally a combination of east and west culture here. *LOL*
