Loong’s Grill Fish
A few weeks ago, I had the wonderful privilege of meeting some prominent food bloggers during a food review at Kafe Loong Grill Fish in NZX, courtesy of BigBoysOven. To be honest, I never even heard of NZX before that. It took me some time to get to this place, since my GPS was not updated with the latest roads. Anyway, this place is still relatively new, judging from the many shoplots still unoccupied.
Loong Grill Fish is a corner shop with an airy and spacious dining area, with tables clad in red cloth. Upon entering the restaurant, I saw many huge banners of ‘Ho Chak’, which is a popular TV food show. I guess this restaurant must have had its fair share of publicity from their coverage.

Without further ado, we were soon served with an array of colourful drinks which looked too pretty to drink!

Colourful drinks
Of course, no one was allowed to take any of the drinks until every photographer was satisfied taking pictures of the drinks. *LOL*

Array of drinks
I love the way they decorated the drinks and used different shapes of glasses to provide variety. You could see layers of colours even within a drink itself.

Layers of colours
I ended up choosing the pink one! It’s apparently made from red dragon fruit, very healthy. But surprisingly, the taste didn’t taste too much like dragon fruit. I suppose they have mixed it with something else to make it sweeter and more appealing.

Very soon, our dishes started appearing on the table. We had this claypot of aromatic lala or clams, with the soup having a tinge of chinese wine in it. Pretty fragrant and the clams were fresh, too. No traces of sand at all. *relieved*

Then, we had Deep fried fish in marmite sauce. The meat of this fish was a little on the tough side, due to the deep frying, but it went very well with the marmite sauce.

Next up was another fish dish, called the Assam Grilled Sting Ray. It was apparently the star of the day. Why did I say apparently? Because I didn’t have the chance to taste it! It was GONE within minutes! I could only taste the gravy. *sob* Judging from how lightning-fast the fish was gobbled up, it must have been GOOD. Trust the food bloggers.

Oh I love this next dish the best! It was the Double egg yolk fried prawns, which was extremely flavourful with succulent prawns! The outlook might not do justice to how good this dish was. In fact, I had no idea it was a prawn dish just by looking at it, but one bite into the first piece, and I was delightfully awaken. It was probably a little on the salty side, but it was perfect with rice.

Later, we had the Japanese Escargots, golden brown and with a hint of butter. It was very smooth and yummy! I don’t really fancy escargots, but the way they made this dish, I wouldn’t even know I was eating escargots!

With so much meat on the table, we were served with a plate of Special mixed vegetables. The vegetables were fresh and young, and the gravy was delicious. A very balanced dish with a variety of colours to boot.

We also had the Chicken and yam in claypot, which was served piping hot. The chicken was actually pretty similar to soya sauce chicken, and I was surprised the taste of yam wasn’t absorbed into the chicken. That was actually a plus point for me, since I am not a big fan of yam.

Next up, who could say no to this eye candy? The amazing Roasted Pork Knuckles, with a side of jelly fish. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Awesome dish. The skin was a delight, even though I am someone who avoids the skin. Dipped it into the sauce and it changed my mind.

Last but not least, we had the beautifully presented Beancurd/Taufu. The beancurd was especially soft and the tomato-based gravy went well with rice.

This is a snapshot of some of the dishes we had that afternoon. Man, are we gluttons! *LOL*

Dishes at Loong Grill Fish
The dishes in Kafe Loong Grill Fish are pretty much above average. I think what it is lacking is the publicity, and the fact that its location is in quite a deserted place. But fear not, for after this gathering, I’m sure more people will know about this amazing place for grilled fish. Did I mention parking is a breeze too?
